How is your child doing? • High School is a big transition • Adjustment period especially with the rigor of IB • School and extra curricular activities are important but finding a balance is key! • It is common for students to have a decrease in grades • Take advantage of tutoring through Learning Connections • AM sessions are in room #16 7:15-8:15 Tuesday-Friday • PM sessions are in room #16 3:15-4:00 Tuesday-Thursday • There are growing pains but remember there is value in this learning curve! Stay strong • Grades are not on transcript until semester grades

Course registration IB 201 will be offered in January regarding more details about course progression and scheduling Students register for next year’s classes at the beginning of February Encourage your student to select a schedule that suits their needs not what their friends are taking
Why we offer AP & IB courses • We double dip offering both Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses • AP —many students achieve AP scholar status • AP + IB= Students receive maximum amount of college credit • Universities very much recognize the rigor of IB • Quarterly Meeting with Vanderbilt, Miami, BU, & UCF-very much prefer IB students over others
GPA • Transcripts only include semester grades • GPA = Grade Point Average: not configured until semester 1 • Unweighted = average determined when A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1 • Weighted = additional .025 for every semester grade earned in honors, pre-IB, AP, and IB classes (resulting in better than 4.0) • Colleges re-figure GPA; most give extra weight for AP and IB classes (making a B = A) • Students who earn the IB Diploma automatically receive top tier Bright Future Scholarship
PSAT • Required for all Sophomores and Juniors • Test Date: October 15, 2014 • Cost: $15.00 • What is the PSAT • The PSAT/NMSQT assesses reading, math, and writing skills • Provides excellent practice for the SAT • Connects students to scholarships and personalized online tools • National Merit Scholarship Program

Purpose of CAS Reflective thinkers - understand strengths and limitations, identify goals and devise strategies for personal growth Accept new challenges and new roles Members of communities with responsibilities towards each other and the environment Leader in a sustained, collaborative project-JUNIOR YEAR Balanced Bonus-Hours counted toward Bright Futures
CAS MANTRA Plan Do Reflect Unpaid & voluntary exchange that is a learning experience Many IB students find that participation in CAS sets them on their life paths
Pre-CAS • Purpose if for students to volunteer in various areas to explore their interest in serving the community (local, national, international) • Ideas are listed on IB website • www.phsibsupport.org under Students & Parents < CAS • 50 hours total between freshman and sophomore year
Not CAS • Any project or activity that is part of a course • Any activity for which student receives a grade, a reward, a payment • An activity in which a profit-seeking entity makes money from student activity • Example: working for free for a dance studio that charges students a fee, even though “teacher” is unpaid
Not CAS • Simple repetitive work over a long period of time • OK to stamp mail for announcing the service you are rendering, but not OK to just put stamps on envelopes for hours at a time for a nonprofit) Learning should be taking place. • Passive pursuits • Attending a play, for example, unless it clearly inspires work in a related activity where student is engaged as in seeing a famous actress perform the role the student will be playing in community theatre
Not CAS Family duty Experience that only benefits the student Fund-raising without a specific service goal Any activity without a responsible adult in charge Anything that divides the community
Deadlines 9th & 10th pre-CAS: -50 hours or more due by August 1st before junior year -Students should have ideas for CAS project • 11th and 12th IB CAS: 100+ hour project integrating at least two categories of C/A/S that begins your junior into your senior year • Completed by January in Senior year • Evidence of 8 learning outcomes • If project begins before junior year, it must continue into junior and senior year to count for IB.
CAS DOCUMENTATION • Web-based record-keeping via Managebac: • www.phs.managebac.com • Smart phone app • Directly linked with IB headquarters • Used for Extended Essay & Theory of Knowledge • Yearly fee is well worth it • CAS hours and reflections are documented in Managebac • Accounts were made last week for those who paid • Open welcome e-mail was sent • Contact Mrs. Gilson if you did not receive e-mail
