Accumulation and magnification • Bioaccumulation- increase in concentration of a pollutant from the environment to the first organism in a food chain • Biomagnification- increase in concentration of a pollutant from one link in a food chain to another • PCB’s- fire retardant, plasticizer- found in aquatic sediments and air • DDT- pesticide- shell thinning

  7. Isn’t the ocean protected? • International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) • 1988, prohibits dumping of plastics at sea • Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) • 1972, prohibits taking, touching and approaching
