OBJECTIVE • Raise awareness of sustainable energy policy at local and regional level • Aimed at elected representatives and practitioners • Answers the following questions: • Where to start? • How can local and regional governments take action • Links with energy management and climate protection • European dimension of sustainable energy policy • Where to get help and support?

  4. SUSTAINABLE ENERGY MANAGEMENT • Encourages local and regional governments to link energy policy into their existing sustainable development strategies or environmental management plans etc. • Introduces ten steps towards sustainable energy policy (for decision makers)

  5. HOW TO TAKE ACTION? • Based on the roles of local and regional governments • Consumer, service provider and model • Planner, developer and regulator • Advisor and motivator • Producer and supplier • Structure • Why to take action? • How to take action: ideas for measures and good examples

  6. CONSUMER, SERVICE PROVIDER AND MODEL • Energy management; building capacities to integrate energy aspects into local policy • Energy performance of buildings • Lighting • Purchasing • Municipal vehicles and transport usage • Public transport

  7. ENERGY ASPECTS IN PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT • Influencing mobility patterns • Mixed use - live/work • Plan to avoid urban sprawl • Mobility plans – municipal and beyond
