Regulations: PM 1340NIH Occ Safety and Health Management • Reg that states we have an OHS program that will be adhered to by management and employees • Sets DOHS as the responsible division • Supervisors ensure employees are trained in safe work practices and are provided appropriate medical care • Employees will adhere to safety std’s
Regulations: PM 3044-2Protection of NIH Personnel who Work with NHP’s • You must receive this introductory training prior to unsupervised work with NHPs • If will enter multiple NHP facilities, then will need to complete the facility component for each facility • Additional “awake procedures” training may be required if you are working with awake NHPs; (see your PI/IS for this training)
Regulations: PM 3044-2Protection of NIH Personnel who Work with NHP’s • Your PI/IS is required to complete this NHP Safety Awareness training • Minors <18yrs prohibited from awake procedure work; <16 not in NHP room
Regulations: PM 3044-2Protection of NIH Personnel who Work with NHP’s • All should be enrolled in AESP • Contractors must have equivalent AESP program; will be seen at OMS for macaque exposure • Accidents promptly reported to supervisor and OMS (after scrubbing or flushing)
Regulations: PM 3044-2Protection of NIH Personnel who Work with NHP’s • Wound scrubbing or mucous membrane flushing must be initiated within 5 minutes of exposure • Use antibacterial soap of any kind and scrub for 15 minutes • Flush mm surface for 15 minutes with saline solution (if provided) or sink tap water or eyewash (for ocular)
Regulations: PM 3044-2Protection of NIH Personnel who Work with NHP’s • Lab personnel receiving fresh macaque tissues/body fluids: • AESP, HPRD, Bloodborne Pathogen Crs • Lab personnel receiving fresh non-macaque NHP tissues/body fluids • AESP only
