About ECSU • Located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina • Total enrollment 2,421 • Founded March 3, 1891 • Two-year Normal School teaching Elementary Education • Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) • 73% African-American, 16% White, 9% Asian, 2% Other • Offers 37 baccalaureate degree programs and 4master's degree programs • BA in Music w/ concentrations
Music Library Then • Satellite location of G.R. Little Library in Fine Arts Bldg • “Resource Room” originally designed to be a Music Library • Process started to satisfy NASM accreditation requirements • 9/12 – 1/13: Interim Librarian • Worked with ECU staff • Organized stored items into subject piles
The Plan Self-sufficient “one-stop shop” Temporarily close library to process space Remove 2 computer stations (of 6) and add group table for more work space Prioritize un-cataloged items and store to make space for cataloged items Pull and scan M-ML cataloged music items in main G.R. Little Library Physically move, process, and re-scan 1,600 cataloged items and shelve

Music Library Now • Approx. 2,500 items (and growing!) • 3,200 M class all together • Music and Art Info Lit classes & library workshops • Music item (M-MT) circulation up approx. 3% • 2012 (full year) vs. 2013 (8 months) • 1-2 student workers
Observations • Title III Funding • Music Library creation opportunity to leverage pre-library background • More diversity needed in graduate training • Practical librarianship classes in Academic/Public areas? • Shadow librarians during their typical work day (similar to student teaching in education)
