The Regulation • At least 50% by volume of the annual average hot water requirement shall be provided by means other than electrical resistance heating, including but not limited to solar heating, heat pumps, heat recovery from other systems or processes
Application • The hot water demand is determined accordance with Table 2 and Table 5 of SANS 10252-1:2004 • The storage requirement is based on maintenance of a hot water temperature of 60 oC • Solar water heating systems shall comply with SANS 1307, SANS 10106 and SANS 10254 based on the thermal performance determined in accordance with the requirements of SANS 6211-1 or SANS 6211-2 • All exposed hot water service pipes shall be clad with insulation with a minimum R-value in accordance with Table 1 • Thermal insulation, if any shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
Current Heat Pump Requirements • Storage tanks need to comply with SANS 151 • Combined systems where the heat pump is integrated with the tank is covered in SANS 151 • Storage tanks need to comply with the Safety requirements of SANS 60335-2-21 • Heat pumps need to comply with the Safety requirements of SANS 60335-2-40 • There is a need to put together a performance requirement for Heat Pumps
The deemed to satisfy clause • Deemed to satisfy can be achieved either via specifying requirements in a standard or • By a rational design • There is no local performance specification for Heat Pumps, so a simple compliance to a specification cannot be used as a deemed to satisfy, so a rational design is required. • EN 16147:2011 may provide a solution to the performance specification for Heat Pumps
