Chapter III Concept and Calculations on pH Shenshen Li, Layla Irabi, Kanzoni Asabigi 08/14/09 HHWI Workshop, Ann Arbor MI
Before getting started • Background: The students have been introduced to acid-base chemistry. They were assigned a reading on acid/base indicators. In this class section, they will be introduced the concept and calculations on pH. • Reading quiz: pH definition, Log calculation
Arrange the following substances in the correct order of increasing acidity:
What is pH • pH is a quantified measure of the acidity or basicity of a solution.
Simulations: Guidelines • Open the tap for solutions with different pH and observe the color of litmus indicator on the scale in the middle; • Change the volume of solution by opening the tap at the bottom of the beaker, and observe how pH changes; • Observe the correlation between pH value and the water components on both logarithmic scale and linear scale. Use the “Zoom” button to change the scale of the y-axis; • Use “Reset All” to start on another solution.
What is the most straightforward relationship you observed between pH value and water components? • pH and concentration of water • pH and volume of solution • pH and molecule count (moles) of hydronium ion • pH and concentration of hydroxide ion • pH and concentration of hydronium ion • etc.
How to Calculate pH Value • pH is calculated from the logarithm of the activity of dissolved hydrogen ions (H+).
