  4. BACKGROUND • Topic brought to BCC by Com. Edwards on April 3, 2012 • Memo to BCC from Mr. Billy Butterfield, Chair,Agricultural Advisory Board(AAB) • Mr. Butterfield was requested to come to the BCC for further discussion

  5. BACKGROUND • Potential use of a portion of Tree Replacement Trust Fund on selected County properties • Consider planting trees for certain County contracted work where appropriate

  6. PRESENTATION OUTLINE • Background • Agr. Adv. Bd. Recommendations • Tree Replacement Trust Fund • Possible Next Steps

  7. AAB RECOMMENDATIONS • Objectives • High vs. low maintenance costs of landscaped right of ways, parks, and natural areas • Adding to the tree canopy as a low cost/low maintenance alternative to other landscaping options

  8. AAB RECOMMENDATIONS • Benefits • Trees provide oxygen & reduce carbon dioxide • Trees protect the community from climate extremes by moderating temperatures & providing shade & wind breaks

  9. AAB RECOMMENDATIONS • Benefits • Trees planted in groups on slopes or in large public areas currently being mowed will reduce long term County landscape maintenance costs • Wholesale trees are currently available at historically low prices due to the recession

  10. AAB RECOMMENDATIONS • Pick Your Areas to Plant • Slopes – expensive to mow • Large recreational park area–reduce maintenance • Certain areas of parking lots – create shade

  11. AAB RECOMMENDATIONS • Pick Your Areas to Plant • Long term mowing & maintenance costs far outweigh initial cost of installing • Mix trees for diversity (Pines, Live Oak, Sweet Gum, Cypress) • Plant in groupings – eliminates maintenance due to eventual canopies

  12. AAB RECOMMENDATIONS • Legacy Trees – This is what we want to be remembered for

  13. AAB RECOMMENDATIONS • Not Like This…

  14. AAB RECOMMENDATIONS • Example • Maintenance period - natural

  15. AAB RECOMMENDATIONS • Example • Mixed trees & pines with low maintenance

  16. AAB RECOMMENDATIONS • Example • Pines & mixed trees on slopes

  17. AAB RECOMMENDATIONS • Example • Large areas in an Orange County Park creates shade with no mowing

  18. AAB RECOMMENDATIONS • Example • Pines mulch themselves & create a landscape barrier for homes • Eventually pines & mixed tree plantings will take less & less maintenance

  19. AAB RECOMMENDATIONS • Example • Maintenance area to shade area

  20. PRESENTATION OUTLINE • Background • Agr. Adv. Bd. Recommendations • Tree Replacement Trust Fund • Possible Next Steps

  24. PRESENTATION OUTLINE • Background • Agr. Adv. Bd. Recommendations • Tree Replacement Trust Fund • Possible Next Steps
