  2. In the old days people washed there clothes by hand, putting them in the river and scrubbing them on the rocks.

  3. In 1797 the scrub board was invented. People scrubbed their clothes on the board to get them clean.

  4. In 1851 James King invented the drum washing machine, but it was still a hand powered washer.

  5. The first washers were helpful but the water had to be heated over a fire to keep it hot.

  6. After washing the clothes they needed to be rinsed. This was done by feeding the clothes through the wringer which was operated by hand.

  7. In the early 1900’s the first machine with an electric motor was made.

  8. Now we are using more electricity because in the old days we did not use electricity when we washed our clothes. • Now every house has an electric washing machine that they use everyday to wash there clothes.
