  1. Our Speech Often Doesn’t Match Our Claims Peter claimed he didn’t know the Lord - Yet his speech betrayed him (Matt. 26:73) “And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, “Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you.” • His speech = his accent (Mark 14:70; Luke 22:59) • His claim & his speech didn’t match

  2. Our Speech Often Doesn’t Match Our Claims • Peter claimed he didn’t know the Lord - Yet his speech betrayed him (Matt. 26:73) • Same could be true of us • Our claim may be right – in harmony with Word • Speech may say otherwise • Our speech (not the accent) but words and language we use • At times we speak the language of Ashdod (Neh. 13:24)

  3. Our Speech Often Doesn’t Match Our Claims • Peter claimed he didn’t know the Lord - Yet his speech betrayed him (Matt. 26:73) • Same could be true of us • Words are a reflection of the heart (Matt. 12:33-37) • No matter what we may claim… • When we talk – we can’t hide who we are (Ecc. 10:3; Prov. 17:28)

  4. Your Speech Betrays You Bible as Our Guide

  5. Bible as Our Guide • The Bible is our infallible guide • It is the God breathed Scriptures (2 Tim. 3:16-17 • It is the basis of what we believe (1 Pet. 4:11) • It is the foundation of all we practice (2 John 9) • What is written is our standard (2 Cor. 4:13) • Our claim is that we believe and follow the Bible • Is a difference in believing in God and believing God (Luke 1:20)

  6. Bible as Our Guide The Bible is our infallible guide Our speech often betrays our claim

  7. Claim Bible is our only guide – yet appeal to “I think”, “I feel”, or “it seems” (Prov. 3:5-6; Rom. 11:34) Claim Bible is our standard – yet stand with family members (which makes them the standard – Luke 14:26) Claim Bible is our rule – yet appeal to a preacher who says we are okay (makes him the standard – 2 Cor. 4:13) Claim we believe Bible - yet say part of it may not be true Claim we believe Bible – yet we raise more questions than offering defense. Say we believe unscriptural practices are wrong (Col. 3:17; 2 John 9) – yet we praise those who practice without authority

  8. Your Speech Betrays You Bible as Our Guide The Lord’s Church –vs- Human Religion

  9. The Lord’s Church –vs- Human Religion • The Lord’s church is distinct • It is built by the Lord (Matt. 16:18) • There is but one (Eph. 4:4) • Church is the saved (Acts 2:47; Eph. 5:23) • If a religion built by man – rooted up (Matt. 15:13)

  10. The Lord’s Church –vs- Human Religion • The Lord’s church is distinct • Our speech often betrays our claim • Claim we believe in one church – yet we talk about “other denominations” • Claim we are added to the church by obed. (Acts 2:47) – yet we talk about when we “joined” the church • Claim a Christian is one who obeys the gospel and is in the one church (Acts 11:23-26) - yet we talk about those in denominations as “good Christian people”

  11. Your Speech Betrays You Bible as Our Guide The Lord’s Church –vs- Human Religion Home & Family

  12. Home & Family • The home & family can be great when follow God • Husband love the wife (Eph. 5:25ff) • Wife respect the husband (Eph. 5:33) • Husband is leader – wife submits (1 Pet. 3:1-6) • Husband is to be understanding (1 Pet. 3:7) • Children are to obey parents (Eph. 6:1-4)

  13. Home & Family • The home & family can be great when follow God • Our speech often betrays our claim • Claim to love our mate – yet way we talk to and about them says otherwise • Claim that marriage is honorable – yet talk of marriage like it is a plague to avoid • Claim to be understanding – yet talk to and about wives like we are masters or bosses • Claim to love children & are a blessing – yet speech says they are nuisance or hindrance • Claim to respect God’s marriage law – yet commend …

  14. Your Speech Betrays You Bible as Our Guide The Lord’s Church –vs- Human Religion Home & Family Personal Godliness

  15. Personal Godliness • Christian life is one of discipleship • Jesus is Lord – ruler – do what he says (Luke 6:46) • God is first – top priority (Matt. 6:33; 1 Pet. 3:15) • Involves relationship with God – can ask and receive (1 Pet. 3:12) • Dedicate our life to serving Christ (Gal. 2:20) • Willing to forsake all (Luke 14:26-33; Mk 8:34)

  16. Personal Godliness • Christian life is one of discipleship • Our speech often betrays our claim • Claim Jesus is Lord – yet talk about what “I” want, “My happiness”, etc. • Claim to believe in prayer – yet say what we pray about will not happen • Claim love the Lord – he is first – yet ask, “Do I have to?” • Claim to stand for modesty – yet commend those who inappropriate • Claim God is first – yet tell of other plans we have – hinder our service

  17. Your Speech Betrays You Bible as Our Guide The Lord’s Church –vs- Human Religion Home & Family Personal Godliness

  18. Back to the Context: Claim – Peter was NOT a disciple But his SPEECH revealed he was! Suppose Someone Is Charging that You Are Not A Disciple of the Lord Would Others Be Able to Say: Listen to Way Talks Speech Shows He is a Disciple?
