Fibre Optic Standards in IEC: Enabling Agile Transparency

This article explores the fibre optic standards activities in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and their focus on enabling agile transparency in next generation networks. It discusses the role of dynamic modules in the standards development process and highlights the typical applications and current activities in this area.

  3. Fibre Optic Standards Activities in the IEC • International Electrotechnical Commission fibre optic standards activities centre around TC86 • IEC TC86 scope: ‘To prepare standards for fibre optic systems, modules, devices and components intended primarily for use with communications equipment.’ • Further information www.iec.ch

  4. TC86 WG8 TC86 WG4 Dynamic Modules Calibration TC86 WG1 Terminology SC86B WG7 Passive Components IEC Fibre Optics Standards Organization IEC TC86 Fibre Optics SC86A SC86B SC86C Fibre and Cables Interconnects Fibre Optic Systems and and Passive Components Active Devices SC86A WG1 SC86B WG4 SC86C WG1 Fibre Test Methods Systems SC86A WG3 SC86B WG5 SC86C WG3 Cables Reliability Optical Amplifiers SC86B WG6 SC86C WG4 Connectors Active Components

  5. Passive Components • Most of the work to date on optical switching standards, focussed in IEC SC86B WG7, Passive Components • IEC SC86B WG7 have developed standards on: • Spatial switches • Wavelength switches • Medium scale (16-128 channel) MxN switches • WWDM devices • DWDM devices

  6. Next Generation Networks • Current networks - opaque and static • Next generation networks - agile (flexible) and transparent • Agile = dynamically reconfigurable

  7. Enabling Agile Transparency • Products needed to enable agile transparency: • Optical transport technology that extends the distance between optical to electronic conversions • Optical switching technology that adds little cost or signal degradation to through traffic • Many companies working on such products

  8. Dynamic Modules • An important class of products are not currently being addressed in IEC TC86 • Differentiating features: • alter and control the inter-relationship of channels in a multi-channel device. • provide flexible connectivity or conditioning, rather than being fixed (i.e. dynamic not static). • Some elements span across subgroups in IEC TC86 • Agreed to form a new group under TC86 called “Dynamic Modules” (TC86 WG8)

  9. Scope of Dynamic Modules Standards Group • Development of new standards for dynamic modules • Some anticipated projects: • Control functions for signalling, telemetry, management, etc. • Devices where states/paths are reconfigurable • Optical Cross Connects • Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers • Dynamic Channel Equalisers • Dynamic Gain Equalisers • Dynamic Dispersion Compensators (polarization and chromatic)

  10. Dynamic Modules - Typical Applications Campus Network Campus Small City OADM WSS Long Haul Point to Point OADM WSS OXC CDC DCE Long Haul Point to Point Long Haul Point to Point OADM Access Ring PDC Inter-Office Ring Big City OADM Long Haul Point to Point Access Ring Town ISP WSS Enterprise Homes

  11. Standards Development • Dynamic Module performance standard proposals - multifaceted: • Module performance standard • Component performance standards • Electrical interface • Embedded software • Physical objective [longer term] • Draw on existing IEC standards wherever possible: • Components (e.g. IEC SC86B WG7) • Test methods (e.g. IEC SC86B WG4) • Ensure effective harmonization with ITU standards through liaison with SG15 Q17

  12. Current Activities • Request for participation of interested experts - Feb 2002 • Prioritise projects taking into account availability of experts • Performance Standard for Dynamic Channel Equalizer • Reliability Qualification Standard for Dynamic Modules • Performance Standard for Dynamic Polarization Mode Dispersion Compensators • Performance Standard for Dynamic Chromatic Dispersion Compensators • Software/Hardware Interface Standard • General and Guidance for Dynamic Modules

  13. Looking Forward • Continue development of existing standards proposals • Review and address new submissions • Next IEC TC86 WG8 meeting - 28th October 2002, Beijing, PRC

  14. Summary • Optical switching forms an important part of IEC’s standards activities • IEC TC86 WG8 established to address market need for standards to support dynamically reconfigurable networks • Recognition that internal and external liaison is important to ensure harmonization and avoid duplication • Further details: johnsonr@corning.com
