  1. English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics

  2. Overview • Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA) and Mathematics • California Alternate Assessments (CAA) for ELA and Mathematics • Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments and Enhancements

  3. Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments • Online assessments • Based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for ELA and mathematics • Computer-adaptive test and a performance task  • In California, administered to more than three million students

  4. Cross-tabulations • Description of the above image is available on slide 30

  5. Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments

  6. FocusedInterimAssessment Blocks (IABs) • Description of the above image is available on slide 31

  7. Updates to the Interim Comprehensive Assessment (ICA) Blueprints • Consistent with changes to the summative assessment blueprints • Now fewer items in the ICA performance task compared with the IAB performance task

  8. ICAs for Grades 9 and 10 • Each form features grade-specific cut scores • For ELA, the grade 9 and 10 ICAs include the same items as the grade 11 ICA. • For math, the items in grade 9 and 10 ICAs differ slightly for grade-appropriate content. • Updated ICAs more closely align with the summative assessments.

  9. Interim Assessment Viewing System Enhancements New resources added: • All universal tools • American Sign Language

  10. Hand Scoring Reminder • To ensure all interim results are in the Interim Assessment Reporting System, all hand scoring must be completed before the system downtime that begins on August 27, 2019. • Email from CalTAC to LEA CAASPP coordinators on June 24, 2019 and August 9, 2019.

  11. Connections Playlists • 73 New Resources added across 15 math and 13 ELA playlists • Each Focused IAB will have a playlist of new resources https://portal.smarterbalanced.org/library/en/digital-library-playlists-flier.pdf

  12. Digital Library 2.0 Anticipated for release in June 2020 • The new Digital Library 2.0 resources will be embedded with formative assessment strategies and accessibility teaching strategies that can be selected within a resource. • Digital Library 2.0 will also have a 508/2.1AA compliant interface and new search abilities.

  13. CAA for ELA and Math

  14. Timing of Assessment Data Availability of assessment data can vary depending on the preparation process

  15. Equating and Delivery of Results • Equating ensures that different forms of a test report scores on the same scale. • Equating can be from one year to another, or different forms used in the same year.

  16. One Percent Threshold Policy • California exceeded the 1% threshold on alternate assessments in 2017–18. ELA – 1.09% Math – 1.09% Science – 1.07% • California also did NOT meet the participation requirement. <95% for ALL students in science <95%for SWD’s in ELA, science, and math

  17. Guidance for IEP Teams • Clarifying content • Include alternative English language proficiency assessments for California • Update Alternate Assessment Participation Worksheet https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/caaiepteamrev.asp

  18. One Percent Threshold Survey and Time Line • NEW requirement for ALL LEA’s to submit participation rates for Alternate Assessments – regardless of whether the LEA exceeded the 1% threshold… • CDE to analyze data of LEA’s that reported – and those that did NOT report exceeding the 1% • Appropriate identification of students taking the CAA’s

  19. Smarter Content Explorer
