  4. I. Recovering the “event quality” of the common 1. Becoming accustomed to the extraordinary • When Mass becomes “ordinary” (nothing new is expected, everything is already known) • Reflecting on the “uncommon” at Mass that has become commonplace • The activity of having a book read to you • Why do we read books to children? 2. The Word of God is proclaimed at Mass • What appears to be “chronos” is really a “kairos” (focusing on the relational meaning of reading) • The Liturgy of the Word as divinely initiated “Advent”

Reading the Bible • Three Ways of Reading Scripture today • A book to be studied (Bible Study) • A manual for living (Life Application Scripture Study) • A place of encounter (Praying with the Scriptures) • Two Principles for Reading the Bible as the Word of God • Heb. 4:12-13: Implications of believing in the Bible as the Word of God • Mark 4:3ff: The Word of God and the situation of the Reader • Preparing for encounters with Jesus a. Setting yourself up for success b. Praying for the inspiration of the Holy Spirit

A book to be studied (Bible Study) • Use of exegesis (e.g. historical-critical and literary methods) • Goal: to understand the text by understanding the context and situation of the human author and the literary genre and the text itself • Recent developments: recover earlier ways of interpreting the Scriptures • The four senses of Scripture (“plain” and spiritual) • The interpretations of the saints and magisterium

  7. A manual for living (Life Application Scripture Study) • “Praxis” approach to Scripture (technique, principles) • Goal: to move from the text into life (WWJD) iii. Method: read the text, identify the principle, seek the practical application for my life

  8. A place of encounter (Praying with the Scriptures) • Use of prayer practices based on the genre of Scripture or type of prayer ii. Goal: read the book in order to meet the Author • Traditional approach: Lectio divina communication and communion

Hebrews 4:12-13 12 Indeed, the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart. 13 No creature is concealed from him, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account.

  10. Mark 4 3 Hear this! A sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Other seed fell on rocky ground where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep. 6 And when the sun rose, it was scorched and it withered for lack of roots. 7 Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it and it produced no grain. 8 And some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit. It came up and grew and yielded thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold…. 15… The ones on the path where the word is sown. As soon as they hear, Satan comes at once and takes away the word sown in them. 16 And these are the ones sown on rocky ground who, when they hear the word, receive it at once with joy. 17 But they have no root; they last only for a time. Then when tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 18 Those sown among thorns are another sort. They are the people who hear the word, 19 but worldly anxiety, the lure of riches, and the craving for other things intrude and choke the word, and it bears no fruit.20 But those sown on rich soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit thirty and sixty and a hundredfold."

  11. III. Seven Ways to Pray with the Bible • Meetings: Encountering Jesus in His encounters with people Jesus meets you (Mark 1:40-45: Jesus meets the leper.) 2. Parables: His parable is addressed to you: Who are you? Where are you? (Luke 10:25-37: The Good Samaritan) • Teachings: Jesus teaches you. (Mat. 11:28-30 His burden is light) • Prophecy: The Word you most need to hear (Jer 29:11-14) • Prayer: Allow the Word to form your prayer: I become what I pray (Ps 63) • Meditating on Events: Meditating on Scipture Luke 1: The Annunciation: Where is she? What does she look like? How old is she? What is she doing? What about Gabriel? The encounter? The message? Goal: illumination • Contemplation Scenes/Words Contemplating Scripture Mark 1:9-11: The Baptism of Jesus Goal: union

Mark 1:40-45 40 A leper came to him (and kneeling down) begged him and said, "If you wish, you can make me clean.“ 41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, "I do will it. Be made clean.“ 42 The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. 43 Then, warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once. 44 Then he said to him, "See that you tell no one anything, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them.“ 45 The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter. He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere.

  13. Luke 10:25-37 30 Jesus replied, "A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. 32 Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. 33 But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight. 34 He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him. 35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, 'Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.‘ 36 Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers' victim?“ 37 He answered, "The one who treated him with mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

  14. Matthew 11:28-30 28 "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for your selves. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden light."

Jeremiah 29:11-14 11 For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare, not for woe! plans to give you a future full of hope. 12 When you call me, when you go to pray to me, I will listen to you. 13 When you look for me, you will find me. Yes, when you seek me with all your heart, 14 you will find me with you, says the LORD, and I will change your lot; I will gather you together from all the nations and all the places to which I have banished you, says the LORD, and bring you back to the place from which I have exiled you.

  16. Psalm 63:2-9 2 O God, you are my God-- for you I long! For you my body yearns; for you my soul thirsts, Like a land parched, lifeless, and without water. 3 So I look to you in the sanctuary to see your power and glory. 4 For your love is better than life; my lips offer you worship! 5 I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my hands, calling on your name. 6 My soul shall savor the rich banquet of praise, with joyous lips my mouth shall honor you! 7 When I think of you upon my bed, through the night watches I will recall 8 That you indeed are my help, and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy. 9 My soul clings fast to you; your right hand upholds me.

Luke 1:26-38 26 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary. 28 And coming to her, he said, "Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.“ 29 But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30 Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, 33 and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.“ 34 But Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?“ 35 And the angel said to her in reply, "The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. 36 And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; 37 for nothing will be impossible for God.“ 38 Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her.

Mark 1:9-11 9 It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. 10 On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. 11 And a voice came from the heavens, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."
