Advanced Manufacturing Techniques Resource 6 Quality Control
Aims • Understand the quality control process • Types of equipment used in quality inspection
Objectives • How to use measuring equipment for inspecting components • Read manual & electronic measuring equipment • Conduct inspection on engineered components • Use of slip gauges • How to use a sine bar to check angles • Understand a DTI clock • Conduct a quality inspection of a engineered component
Vernier Calliper A Vernier Calliper can be used to measure a variety of dimensions across a wide range of components. The accuracy achieved is within 0.01mm
Micrometer Micrometers are available in a range of sizes; 0 -25, 25 - 50, 50 - 75 & so on. The accuracy achieved is 0.01mm
Go/No-go thread & plug gauges Thread & plug gauges are used specifically for checking holes & screw threads. The double ended plug gauge is used for checking go & no–go hole, internal & external thread dimensions.
Height Gauge A height gauge is used for checking dimensional accuracy or marking out components. The pointer is sharpened to assist the user when marking out components or measuring vertical/horizontal faces. The measuring scale is usually in metric and/or imperial units.
Slip gauges Slip gauges are extremely accurate and precise steel blocks. Slip gauges are stored in a box set, and the slips can be built, using two or more, to form a wide range of sizes to check dimensional accuracy or accuracy of measuring instruments.
Dial test indicator (DTI) Dial Test Indicators have a spring loaded plunger, attached to a needle that rotates around a dial, supported on a magnetic base. The measurement dial can vary depending on the type of clock used. Dial indicators measure a range of dimensions using metric or imperial measurement scale.
Sine Bar A sine bar is used for measuring angles. The distance between the two centre cylinders is manufactured to precision. The sine bar is used in conjunction with slip gauges, depending on the trigonometry calculations preformed.
Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) The Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) is a precision device used for inspecting geometric dimensions. The machine can be operated manually or computer controlled using a probe which is attached to a moving axis. The accuracy achieved is phenomenal
Surface finish Surface finish comparison plates Checking surface texture Checking the surface finish of a component can be achieved by running your finger over the surface of the finished product and compare the texture against the comparison plates.
