Discipleship trainingSteve GreenSession 3 – Grace declares we can live without shame!
Ice-breakerCan you think of a time (perhaps as a teenager) when you felt really bad about your size, shape, weight, physical features, intellectual capacity or social ability?Where do these negative thoughts come from? What effect do they have on your ability to serve God?
Re-cap • Grace sets us free (week 1) • Free from the slavery of trying to earn God’s approval by what we ‘do’. God loves us for what we ‘are’ and not for what we ‘do’. • Grace declares us innocent (week 2) • God has taken all our wrongdoings and sinfulness and dealt with it through Christ on the cross so that we are pronounced innocent. • Grace declares we have nothing to be ashamed of (Today)
Origins of shame • Guilt is about what we have done • Shame is about what we think is wrong with us • What do people sometimes say to us that makes us experience shame in church or family life? • How did Adam and Eve feel before/after they broke God’s rules? (Genesis 2:25; 3:10) Page 5 • What did they do to hide their shame? (Genesis 3:7) How do we deal with our shame today?
How do we use fig leaves today (to cover over our shame) • Lying about accomplishments / abilities • Pretending everything is okay (another lie) • Shifting the blame to others for the problems we have • Criticizing others like us to make them appear inferior (and us superior!) • Compensating for deficiencies in one area by trying to excel in others. Striving to be a perfectionist. How does God deal with our unrighteousness, shame and disgrace?
Martin Luther’s Problem • We are unrighteous (and filled with feelings of shame) • God is righteous. But how is that ‘good news’ since all religions would say that • Martin Luther wrestled with this problem through the night until he discovered the truth about the meaning of the righteousness of God What did Luther discover was meant by the righteousness of God?
Martin Luther’s Problem • The righteousness of God is the process by which God MAKES US RIGHTEOUS THROUGH CHRIST • “God made him who had no sin to be sin (or a sin offering) for us, so that IN HIM WE MIGHT BECOME THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD!(2 Corinthians 5:21) • Brilliant! That is GRACE! This grace covers all our sin, guilt, disgrace and SHAME!
Dealing with shameGod removes our disgrace by giving us grace
Disgrace Grace How does God achieve this in Christ?
God gives us a new identity • What does Ezekiel 11:19 say? Page 838 • Hear what 2 Corinthians 5:17 says? This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! (New Living Translation) • What is the story of Orel Hershiser? What new names did God give to people in the Bible?
Story of Gideon • Read Judges 6:1-16 (Page 248) • What does Gideon think about himself? • Why does he think this? • What does God think about Gideon? • When Gideon accepts God’s call, what happens? • Who was Gideon fighting? • Watch video. Click here. What does God think about us?
Staying free from sin and shame • Once we recognise who we are in God we will come under attack. We need to cling to Christ. • The devil is prowling around (1 Peter 5:8) • Pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18) • Submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you (James 4:7) • Recognise we are dead to sin (Romans 6:6) • Substitute right thoughts for evil thoughts (Philippians 4:8) What does the devil say about us?
What does the devil say about us? • We are a random event with no planned purpose other than to live for self-gain • We are naturally sinful and we cannot change this • Everyone sins and we are should join them • We cannot (and should not) resist temptation • Worship, prayer and fellowship are futile • God (if he exists) doesn’t care whether we sin or not What are the lies he tell us?
What does God say about us? • We are: Beloved (Colossians 3:12); Beautiful (Psalm 149:4); Chosen (Ephesians 1:4); Precious (Isaiah 43:4); Loved (1 John 4:10); Clean (John 15:3); Welcomed (Ephesians 3:12); Heirs (Romans 8:17); Holy (Hebrews 10:10); Forgiven (Psalm 103:3); Delighted in (Psalm 147:11); Planned (Ephesians 1:11-12); Pure (1 Corinthians 6:11); Gifted (2 Timothy 1:6); Treasured (Deuteronomy 7:6); God’s work of Art (Ephesians 2:10) • We are UNASHAMED(Romans 10:11) Page 1137 Who are we going to believe God OR the father of lies (the devil)?
Prayer to be released from shame • Father God, I submit completely to your authority and resist the devil who I know will flee from me. In the name of Jesus, I command Satan to go. Fill me with your Holy Spirit afresh now so that I can be released from ALL SENSE OF SHAME. I claim the promise that I am a child of God and, if a child, an heir of this, and all that you have promised me by your grace. AMEN
