Scheme Our roll passes are intended to attack one side of the field with vertical and horizontallyroutes that are used to attack and stress playside the dog and corner.
Scheme That Means: • QB will drop toward one side of the formation and reset over the playside offensive tackle. • QB footwork ties in to the timing of the routes and the reads. • WR routes are flexible and meant to find space and throwing lanes. • Line protections will reach to the side of the play.

Pre-Snap Read • Assess coverage. • What is the safeties job? • What is the corners job? • How does this combination stress his responsibilities? • What is the dog’s job? • What throwing lanes might he take away? Where will the space be? • Blitzes? • Think through where you will go with the ball if a backer leaves an area. • Don’t over think it. Attack.
Post-Snap Reads • Progression Read • Similar to the Rhythm passes. • Low / High: Read the corner low to high then inside to crossers. • Outside / In: Read the Corner and Dog outside in and then deep to crossers. • For example: Curl (5 / 2 / 8) • Read the 2 rt as he breaks to the sideline, if the corner comes up or the dog is in good position, gather once and move onto the 5 rt. If there is a lane to throw in, do so, otherwise look to the 3rd receiver or the crossers (backside routes).
Playside Routes When a play is called (ex. Curl Rt), all the receivers on the playside (ex. Rt) execute the numbers on the card (ex. 5 / 2 / 8) 5 2
Backside Routes All receivers on the backside of the call (left in this example) carry out the predetermined backside routes. Those are: 7c / 3c 7c 3c
Backside Routes Deep Middle 7 cross = A 7 route that cut across the field attempting to get into the deep middle
Backside Routes Deep Middle Hole 7 cross = A 7 route that cut across the field attempting to get into the deep middle 3 cross = A 3 route that crosses the formation into the opposite hole
Post-Snap Reads • Progression Read (cont.) • These reads are set up to happen in a natural line of site and are timed with the drop • The QB should never be looking left, right, left or look left throw right. • Always right to left / left to right and high to low / low to high or a combination of the two (See example on next slide)

Plays • There are three base plays in the Roll portion of our offense. • Roll Plays: • Curl • Smash • Comeback • Player Routes • Similar to the quick plays, players are assigned routes that change if they are the #1, #2, or #3 receiver. • Backside routes are always 7c / 3c / 1d regardless of the play called to the playside
