Definitions • NCSP(Nationally Certified School Psychologist)If states “accept NCSP as a route to school based credential,” applicants may submit documentation of their NCSP to the state credentialing office in order to work within that state, which may streamline the application and/or renewal process. In this regard, the NCSP offers a great deal of flexibility for school psychologists moving to other states that accept the NCSP. • PRAXIS Series II examRefers to the Educational Testing Service (ETS) owned and administered Praxis II exam. If taken before September, 2008, the School Psychologist Praxis II Examination test code is 10400. If taken after September, 2008, the test code is 10401. ETS’s Tests at a Glancecontains content outlines, sample questions with rationale for the best answers, and test-taking strategies. ETS also provides a list of Passing scores by states. • State Education Agency (SEA)A term used to refer to the state department of education. Most school psychologists obtain the credential to practice in the schools through their SEA, with Texas as the only exception. Several states have various levels of credentialing depending on experience and level of education. States may use the title “licensure” or “certification” to refer to this credential. School psychologists in Texas are credentialed through the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychology. • NASP-Approved Continuing Professional DevelopmentNASP maintains a system of approved providers throughout the country. The NASP-Approved Provider System (APS) permits sponsors of continuing professional development to offer "NASP-approved" training for school psychologists. Those who hold the NCSP will need to obtain 10 of their continuing professional development credits from NASP- or APA- approved providers beginning in January 2010 in order to review their NCSP credential. Notably, while many states do not require NASP-approved continuing professional development to maintain credentials, they are often one form of acceptable CPD credit to be applied towards renewal. • Board of PsychologyFor most states, school psychologists who wish to engage in private practice must obtain a credential through the state board of psychology. While the title of this board varies from state to state (e.g., Board of Examiners, Psychologist Examiners Board, Department of Health), we use the phrase “Psychology board” for all states when providing the website address.

Becoming a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) • PRAXIS II • Respecialization Information Individuals with a graduate degree in a closely related field (e.g., clinical psychology, counseling psychology) may be eligible for the Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) designation, provided they have completed a respecialization or equivalent program at a NASP-approved graduate program. Please note that graduate programs handle applications from those with prior graduate degrees in different ways, but all NASP approved programs must assure that all program completers, regardless of backgrounds have met the same national standards for school psychology preparation. Not all graduate programs offer respecialization options, and many programs will enroll only students pursuing a graduate degree in school psychology. Please check with the graduate program to inquire about its options. Along with the certification application, the current program director of the training program where the applicant completed the respecialization program must complete and sign the "Documentation for Respecialization Cases" form. Additional documentation must be provided as well, such as a copy of the program of studies and transcript review completed upon the applicant's enrollment in the NASP-approved program. The information typically submitted is a course-by-course evaluation of the coursework required as part of their program and how the applicant met those requirements. For example, the program director would list all of the coursework a student must complete to earn the specialist degree and indicate that either the applicant completed the course at their school and include the course number (so that it can be verified on the transcript) or that the same course was completed at another institution and include the course number (again, so that it can be verified on the transcript).
Becoming a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) • Qualification Standards To qualify for national certification, a school psychologist must meet the established standards of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP): Standards for Graduate Preparation of School Psychologists (formerly Training and Field Placement Program in School Psychology), Standards for the Credentialing of School Psychologists,Principles for Professional Ethics, and the Model for Comprehensive and Integrated School Psychological Services.These documents are contained in the NASP Professional Standards. • Certification Requirements Dependent on Individual State • Coursework Requirement Completion of a 60 graduate semester/90 quarter hours through an organized program of study that is officially titled “School Psychology.” At least 54 graduate semester / 81 quarter hours must have been exclusive of credit for the supervised internship experience. • Internship Successful completion of a 1200-hour internship in school psychology, of which at least 600 hours must be in a school setting. The internship must be recognized through institutional (transcript) documentation. Until December 31, 1994, internships with institutional documentation are accepted. Individuals who graduate prior to December 31, 1994 from a training program that does not offer a 1200-hour internship may complete a Field-Based Internship. Additional information available from the NSPCS. • Examination Applicants must achieve a passing score (165) on the National School Psychology Examination administered by the Educational Testing Service. Test scores remain valid for ten (10) years after the test. Test scores older than ten (10) years are considered expired and would require the re-taking of the examination. The School Psychologist test, code 0401, is administered through the Praxis Series of Educational Testing Service. Where else can I work with my masters in school psychology? • From NASP: The majority (81%) of school psychologists work in public school settings. Other primary places of employment are private schools, community agencies, hospitals and clinics, and universities. School psychologists generally work as practitioners, administrators, and faculty/researchers. A specialist-level degree will allow for employment in most states as a practitioner and administrator (with appropriate administrative credential), while a doctoral degree allows for practice as a practitioner, administrator, and faculty/researcher.

ALABAMA **Accepts NCSP as a route to school based credential SEA Credential:Professional Educator Certificate: Requires completion of a state-approved program with a minimum GPA of 3.25; a 300 hour supervised internship in a P-12 setting by an individual holding valid Alabama certification in school psychology; and a passing score on the Praxis II. Applicants must verify two full years of full-time, educational experience in a P-12 school system or hold the NCSP. Continuing Education Requirements:Professional educator certificates may be continued with verification of one of the following every 5 years: 3 full years of full-time satisfactory educational experience and 50 clock hours of professional development 3 full years of full-time satisfactory educational experience and 3 graduate semester hours 50 clock hours of professional development and 3 graduate semester hours 6 graduate semester hours These pre-qualifications must be completed by September 1 of the expiration year. Scope of Practice:The SEA credential does not allow for practice in any other arena other than the schools. To practice outside of schools, one must apply through the Alabama Board of Examiners in Psychology. Alabama does not offer an applied behavior analysis credential.
ALASKA Accepts NCSP as a route to school based credential (in addition to state exams) and satisfies renewal requirements for those at the Master Teacher Certificate level. Requires graduation from a program approved by NASP or APA. SEA Credential: Initial Certificate: granted for the first 3 years of employment. The initial certificate requires an approved three-credit AK studies class and an approved three-credit multicultural class. Type C Special Services Certificate: received after 3 years of employment. School Psychology Master Teacher Certificate: can be obtained after receiving the initial certificate if applicant obtains the NCSP. Provisional Certificate: can be issued until Alaska studies and multicultural courses are taken (see below) Emergency Certificate: may be granted at the request of a school district. A district is unlikely to request a waiver unless the applicant had completed their education. ARIZONA Accepts NCSP as a route to school based credential. SEA Credential: School psychologist: Requires a master's or a more advanced degree from an accredited institution and one of the following: -Completion of a 60 Credit Hours graduate program in school psychology, -Completion of a doctoral program in psychology and completion of a retraining program in school psychology from an accredited institution or board-approved program with a letter of institutional endorsement from the head of the school psychology program -Five years of experience within the last 10 years working full time in the capacity of a school psychologist in a school setting serving any portion of grades kindergarten through 12, NCSP credential A diploma in school psychology from the American Board of School Psychology Continuing Education Requirements: 180 continuing education credits every 6 years. The SEA accepts NASP-approved continuing professional development credits toward renewal. Scope of Practice: The SEA credential does not allow for practice in any other arena other than the schools. To practice outside of schools, one must apply through the Arizona Board of Psychologist Examiners. The Arizona Board of Psychologist Examiners also regulates Applied Behavior Analysts in Arizona. ARKANSAS SEA Credential: School Psychology Specialist requires a Standard Non-Instructional Student Services License. To obtain this credential, one must meet the following requirements: Completion of an advanced degree in school psychology or completion of an advanced degree in counseling with a graduate level program of study in school psychology from a college/university and program holding accreditation recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Score of 159 or higher on the Praxis II School Psychology Specialists are not eligible for a provisional teaching license. Continuing Education Requirements: Required 60 contact hours every 5 years. NASP approved CPD hours are accepted towards renewal. Scope of Practice: School Psychology Specialists are not permitted to practice in any other arena other than the schools, and may not refer to themselves as "school psychologists". Individuals at the doctoral level may become licensed through the Arkansas Board of Psychology, at which point they may refer to themselves "school psychologists". Arkansas does not offer an Applied Behavior Analysis credential.
CALIFORNIA Recognizes NASP-approved programs as meeting training requirements for out-of-state applicants. SEA Credential (Commission on Teacher Credentialing): Pupil Personnel Services Credential, Specialization in School Psychology (Trained in California): Individuals must satisfy all the following requirements: --A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. --Complete postbaccalaureate degree study consisting of a minimum of 60 semester units in a California Commission-approved professional preparation program specializing in school psychology, including a practicum with school-age children. --Obtain the recommendation of a California college or university with a Commission-approved Pupil Personnel Services program specializing in school psychology. This process will result in the college or university submitting the recommendation online. --Complete the Basic Skills Requirement. Pupil Personnel Services Credential, Specialization in School Psychology (Trained Outside of California): Individuals must satisfy all the following requirements: --A baccalaureate degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university. --Complete a professional program of postbaccalaureate degree study consisting of a minimum of 60 semester units specializing in school psychology, including a practicum requirement and supervised field experience. CALIFORNIA (Cont’d) Continuing Education Requirements: Must renew every 5 years through the website; however, there are no continuing education requirements for renewal. Scope of Practice: The SEA credential does not allow for practice in any other arena other than the schools. To practice outside of schools, one must apply through the CA Board of Behavioral Sciences or the California Board of Psychology
COLORADO Accepts NCSP as a route to school based credential. SEA Credential: Professional School psychologist: Completion of the following: -An Educational Specialist Program (minimum of 60 graduate semester hours) for the preparation of school psychologists, serving children/students -Passing the Praxis II (passing score of 165) -Practicaconsisting of a sequence of closely supervised on-campus or field-based activities -An internship Other routes include: -NCSP -If an applicant holds a valid license issued by the Colorado State Board of Psychologist Examiners - Provisional License: Colorado has a 'temporary Teacher Endorsement' or TTE for any school professional who is in an approved training program in an education-related field, including school psychology. It allows one to practice in the schools for up to 3 years while completing a degree program.
COLORADO (CONT’D) Continuing Education Requirements: Individuals must acquire 90 clock hours of professional development every 5 years for those with the Professional credential. Renewal is required after 3 years for those with the Provisional credential. The SEA accepts NASP-approved continuing professional development credits toward renewal. Scope of Practice: The SEA credential does not allow for practice in any other arena other than the schools. To practice outside of schools, one must apply through the Department of Regulatory Agencies Psychologist Examiners Board or Board of Registered Psychotherapists. Colorado does not offer an Applied Behavior Analysis credential.
CONNECTICUT SEA Credential: -Initial Educator Certificate: Requires a master's degree and completion of 45 semester hours in a planned school psychology program as part of or in addition to the master's degree, plus recommendation of school psychology program. New Rules Effective July 1, 2015, (seehttp://www.sde.ct.gov/sde/lib/sde/pdf/cert/regulations/Regulations_Adopted_on_12-1-2010.pdf). -Provisional Certificate: -Professional Certificate:New Rules Effective July 1, 2015, As of July 1, 2012, schools must supply applied behavior analysis services to students with autism whose IEPs require such services (see http://search.cga.state.ct.us/dtsearch_pub_statutes.html
CONNECTICUT (CONT’D) Continuing Education Requirements: Professional Certificate: Provisional Certificate: **The Initial Certificate in nonrenewable; however, if all other requirements except the internship are met in an approved program for school psychology, the initial certificate may be issued and reissued once with some conditions. The SEA does not accept NASP-approved continuing professional development credits toward renewal. Scope of Practice: The school based credential itself allows only for employment by a board of education. An exemption in the psychologist licensing law allows school psychologists with a professional educator certificate (which requires successful experience as a school psychologist) to use their title as a 'school psychologist' or 'school psychological examiner' to describe their work in the private sector although this does not mean a school psychologist can open or work in a private or independent practice. DELAWARE Accepts NCSP as a route to school based credential Graduation from a NASP or APA approved program helps meet credentialing requirements SEA Credential: In Delaware one must hold a "license" and a "certificate". The "license" allows practice in Delaware, and the "certificate" determines the area (i.e., school psychology). Initial License (3 years non-renewable) requires evidence of practicum, a bachelors degree, and successful completion of the Praxis I Math, Reading, and Writing. Continuing License (5 years) is offered to those who have met the requirements of the Initial License. This credential can be awarded to applicants from out of state that demonstrate three years of successful work experience as a school psychologist (with positive summative evaluations). For those that have been out of the profession for 3 years or more and are from out of state, applicants must participate in an approved mentoring program within the first year of employment. Certificate as a School Psychologist requires one of the following: ***Graduation from a NASP or APA approved program in school psychology ***Hold the NCSP ***Hold a valid and current school psychology credential from another state
DELAWARE (CONT’D) Continuing Education Requirements: An Initial License is valid for 3 years, unless revoked, and may not be renewed. During the term of the Initial License, individuals are required to participate in mentoring (within the school) and other prescribed professional development activities offered by the Department and by the school district or charter school or other employing authority in which they are employed. In addition, individuals must receive 2 out of 3 successful evaluations.A Continuing License is valid for 5 years and requires 90 hours of professional development for renewal. Each educator is responsible for obtaining any necessary approvals from his or her employer before participating in a professional development activity, although NASP approved CPD hours are generally accepted towards renewal. 1 semester hour is equal to 15 CPD hours. Scope of Practice: The SEA credential does not allow for practice in any other arena other than the schools. To practice outside of schools, one must apply through the Delaware Board of Examiners of Psychologists.
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA SEA Credential: School Psychologist: Requires a conferred master's degree in school or educational psychology from an accredited institution that includes at least 42 graduate semester hours in specified content areas and at least 500 clock hours of satisfactory field experience in a pre-K–12 school setting under the supervision of a credentialed school psychologist. More information http://www.osse.dc.gov/seo/frames.asp?doc=/seo/lib/seo/School_Psychologist_certification_requirements.pdf Continuing Education Requirements: To renew, applicants must submit evidence of 6 semester hours or 90 contact hours (or a combination of the two) of professional development activities completed within the 4 years prior to the date of the licensure application submission. A minimum of 3 semester hours/45 clock hours of the professional development activities must be directly related to school psychology; the remaining required 3 semester hours/45 clock hours may include any professional development activity relevant to pre-K–12 education and/or serving pre-K–12 students. NASP-approved continuing professional development hours are accepted towards renewal. Scope of Practice: The Department of Health in DC limits practice to public schools for school psychologists with the SEA credential. Independent practice is not allowed unless the person goes through the state licensure process regulated by the Department of Health, Health Professional Licensing Administration Board of Psychology. School Psychologists working for public-charter or private schools are not mandated by DC law to hold a license, although local education agencies may opt to require a state license for employment.
FLORIDA Accepts NCSP as a route to school based credential (in addition to passing state exams). SEA Credential: Plan One. A specialist's or higher degree with a major in school psychology which includes a year-long supervised school psychology internship in an elementary or secondary school. Plan Two. A master's or higher degree and completion of a graduate program in school psychology which includes 60 semester hours of graduate credit in school psychology, 3 semester hours in a supervised practicum in school psychology, and 6 semester hours in a year-long supervised school psychology internship in an elementary or secondary school. No more than 12 semester hours of credit in the internship shall be accepted. Plan Three. Completion of a graduate program in school psychology and 3 years of full-time experience as a school psychologist in an elementary or secondary school. The experience shall be acceptable provided the applicant held a valid full-time school psychologist credential issued by the state where the experience was gained. Plan Four. A master's or higher degree with 60 semester hours of graduate credit in school psychology in specified areas; 3 semester hours in a supervised practicum in school psychology [3 years of full-time experience as a school psychologist in an elementary or secondary school will satisfy the supervised practicum requirement]; and 6 semester hours in a year-long supervised school psychology internship in an elementary or secondary school. No more than 12 semester hours of credit in the internship shall be accepted. The internship shall total at least 1200 clock hours with at least 600 clock hours in an elementary or secondary school. Three years of full-time experience as a school psychologist as will satisfy the internship requirement. Plan Five. A valid NCSP. Florida offers a Temporary Certificate which is valid for 3 years and is nonrenewable, and provides time to complete all requirements for a Professional Certificate while working full-time. Part of these requirements include passing thethree portions of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE).
FLORIDA (CONT’D) Continuing Education Requirements: Requires 120 hours of continuing professional development every 5 years. CPD must be earned in a minimum of 3 hour increments to apply toward renewal. Participation in a 3-hour college course, either as student or instructor, in an approved Florida master's inservice program is equal to 60 hours (minimum grade of a C). NASP-approved CPD hours are accepted towards renewal. Scope of Practice: The SEA credential onlyallows for practice in the schools. However, Florida offers a license for school psychologists through the Florida Office of School Psychology that allows for practice in the private sector. This requires a passing score on the Praxis II (165); a doctorate, specialist, or equivalent degree in a program primarily psychological in nature (a master's degree in school psychology is acceptable); and successful completion of 3 years of school psychology experience: One year of experience consists of 1500 hours within 12 consecutive months. Two years of the 3-year requirement shall consist of supervised experience by a credentialed school psychologist in any jurisdiction or a licensed psychologist. Doctoral internships may be applied toward the supervision requirement. Nondoctoral internships, which are part of the education requirement, do not count toward the supervised or general experience requirement.
GEORGIA Accepts NCSP as a route to school based credential (in addition to state exam). If not NCSP, must graduate from a NASP-approved graduate program. SEA Credential: Applicants for a Clear Renewable Certificate must complete a NASP-approved training program or submit a copy of a valid NCSP credential. Completion of a Georgia school psychology training program at the sixth year level (Ed.S.) or the seventh year level (Ed.D. or Ph.D.) that is approved by the Georgia State Board of Regents will also meet requirements for the clear renewable certificate. If an applicant has satisfied all other requirements except that the highest degree held is a non-NASP-approved master's degree in school psychology, the credential is issued as a Non- Renewable Professional Certificate to allow time to complete a state-approved specialist program in school psychology or a NASP-approved master's degree (Level 6 equivalent) program in school psychology or obtain the NCSP credential (Level 6 equivalent). Applicants must have a minimum of 72 graduate semester hours for the school psychologist credential. They must also accrue 500 hours of practicum experience with a minimum of 250 hours in a school setting, and a minimum of 1200 hours for the internship in school psychology with at least 600 of those hours in a school setting. Applicants must also pass the GACE (Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators) with a passing score of 220. Further, an applicant in Georgia must verify study or experience within 5 years preceding the date of application.
GEORGIA (CONT’D) Continuing Education Requirements: Certification renewal occurs every five years, and requires 100 hours of continuing professional development or submission of a valid NCSP or a valid State of Georgia Psychologist license. NASP-approved continuing professional development hours are accepted toward renewal. Scope of Practice: The SEA credential does not allow for practice in any other arena other than the schools. To practice outside of schools, one must apply through the Georgia Board of Psychology. The Georgia SEA does not offer a school-based applied behavior analysis credential.
HAWAII Accepts NCSP as a route to school based credential Graduation from a NASP or APA approved program meets one component of graduate preparation requirements for the doctoral level credential SEA Credential:School Psychologist (Master's): must meet only 1 of the following: A master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in school psychology and a 1,200 hour internship of which 600 hours must have been in a school setting. If the internship is less than 1,200 hours and/or 600 hours in a school setting, 1 additional year of supervised professional work as a School Psychologist in a school setting shall meet the required internship experience. 2. A master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a major in educational psychology, counseling psychology, or closely related field in a psychology profession, provided that certain courses were offered, and a 1,200 hour internship of which 600 hours must have been in a school setting, 1 additional year of supervised professional work as a School Psychologist in a school setting shall meet the required internship experience.3. A current school psychologist credential issued by another state 4. NCSP
HAWAII (CONT’D) School Psychologist (Doctoral): requires meeting one of the following requirements: A doctorate degree from a regionally accredited college or university in school psychology, educational psychology, counseling psychology, or a closely related field provided that certain courses were included. Also requires an internship in a school setting. Applicants must also demonstrate 4 years of responsible professional experience as a school psychologist which involved working with children. Possession of a doctorate degree from a NASP or APA approved program in school psychology (or closely related field in a psychology profession as long as certain courses are offered) and a 1,200 hour internship of which 600 hours must have been in a school setting. The internship may be substituted for 2 years of the four 4 years of the specialized experience requirement. Additionally, completion of a post-doctorate internship in a school setting may be substituted for 1 year of the 4 years of the specialized experience Requirement. Scope of Practice: The SEA does not allow for practice outside of the schools. One must apply through the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Professional and Vocational Licensing office.
IDAHO Accepts NCSP as a route to school based credential and satisfies renewal requirements SEA Credential: Pupil Personnel Services Certificate, School Psychologist Endorsement: Requires institutional endorsement and completion of a minimum of 60 graduate semester credit hours, which must be accomplished through one of the following: -Completion of an approved master's degree in education or psychology and completion of a school psychology specialist degree program. -Completion of an approved 60 semester credit hour (or 90 quarter credit hour) master's degree program in school psychology. -Completion of an approved 60 credit hour school psychology specialist degree program which did not require a master's degree as a prerequisite, with experience in a classroom (may include teaching, student teaching, or special education practicum), and completion of a 1200 hour internship under the direct supervision of a credentialed school psychologist. -Earn a current and valid NCSP issued by NASP ---If the applicant holds a current, valid credential in another state and submits a complete application, the applicant may receive a 3-year Idaho interim certificate. The interim certificate will allow the applicant to work in an Idaho school in the endorsed area indicated on the interim certificate while completing any Idaho coursework and/or testing requirements. Once all deficiencies noted on the interim credential are completed, the applicant may apply for a renewable, 5-year initial Idaho credential. If the initial evaluation demonstrates that the applicant meets all requirements, then a renewable, 5-year credential will be issued instead of the interim credential.
IDAHO (CONT’D) Continuing Education Requirements: Requires 6 semester credit hours every 5 years. May satisfy 3 of the 6 semester hours through inservice professional development (15 inservice hours = 1 semester credit hour). The renewal credit requirement may be waived if the applicant holds a current and valid NCSP. Scope of Practice: The SEA does not allow for practice outside of the schools. One must apply through the Idaho Board of Psychologist Examiners. Idaho does not offer an Applied Behavior Analysis credential.
ILLINOIS Holding the NCSP satisfies requirements for renewal. SEA Credential: --School Psychologist (School Service Personnel Certificate): Requires a master's degree or higher in psychology or educational psychology with a specialization in school psychology from a regionally accredited institution, 250 hours of practicum in a school setting or child study center, and a 1200 contact hour internship lasting a full school year under the direction of a credentialed school psychologist. The internship requirement may be waived with verification of a full year of professional school psychologist experience on a valid state-issued school psychologist credential, or an Illinois provisional school psychologist certificate. --Applicants are also required to pass the School Psychologist (#183) test, as well as the test of basic skills. Applicants who hold a valid school psychologist credential from another state are assumed to have passed a test of basic skills and are exempt from the Illinois Basic Skills test. Provisional School Service Personnel Certificate: Applicants from other states who hold out-of-state credentials with comparable endorsements may obtain a Provisional School Service Personnel Certificate which is valid for two full fiscal years, with the first year ending on June 30 following the issue date. The holder of a provisional certificate should use this time period to complete testing requirements and remove other deficiencies found during the evaluation. Individuals who hold valid, comparable credentials from other states will be exempt from taking the Basic Skills test, unless previously failed, but must take the content test.
ILLINOIS (CONT’D) Continuing Education Requirements: Requires renewal every 5 years. Holding the NCSP will satisfy the requirements for renewal. School psychologists without the NCSP require 80 continuing professional development units (CPDUs). NASP-approved continuing professional development credits are accepted toward renewal. Scope of Practice: School psychologists may obtain a supervisory endorsement with the following credentials: --Hold a master's or higher degree --Have completed eight semester hours of graduate professional education which shall include at least one course related primarily and explicitly to the supervision of personnel and one course primarily and explicitly related to the administration and organization of schools --Have at least 2 years of appropriate school service personnel experience Illinois does not offer an ABA credential.
INDIANA Accepts NCSP as a route to school based credential for Accomplished Practitioner License SEA Credential: Proficient Practitioner License: Applicant must have successfully completed a master's degree from an approved school psychologist program, or, if already degreed, have completed additional coursework from an approved school psychologist program. --An applicant may obtain the Accomplished Practitioner License when the applicant has: --Completed 5 years of experience as a school psychologist subsequent to the issuance of the proficient practitioner license --Completed an educational specialist or higher degree in a psychology-related field at an approved program to offer the appropriate course work --Been recommended for the accomplished practitioner license by the licensing advisor at the approved programor completed all requirements for the NCSP and holds a currently valid NCSP --Field experience and graduate semester hour requirements are not specified. Continuing Education Requirements: Proficient License must be renewed after 2 years. The Accomplished License must be renewed every 5 years by acquiring 90 clock hours (1 semester hour = 15 clock hours). IOWA Accepts NCSP as a route to school based credential. Requires graduation from a NASP- or APA-approved program. SEA Credential: --An applicant shall have completed a program of graduate study that is currently approved (or that was approved at the time of graduation) by NASP or APA, or hold the NCSP, in preparation for service as a school psychologist through one of the following options: --Completion of a master's degree with sufficient graduate semester hours beyond a baccalaureate degree to total 60 --Completion of a specialist's degree of at least 60 graduate semester hours with or without completion of a terminal master's degree program --Completion of a doctoral degree program of at least 60 graduate semester hours with or without completion of a terminal master's degree program or specialist's degree program --TheInitial professional service license is valid for 2 years, at which point one would qualify for the Standard professional service license which is valid for 5 years. One may then apply for the Master professional service license. --A 1-year Class A license (nonrenewable) may be issued to an individual who must complete an internship or thesis as an aspect of an approved program leading to the school psychologist endorsement.
IOWA (CONT’D) Continuing Education Requirements: Initial: No renewal credits required Standard: Requires 6 credits (or 90 CPD hours) after 5 years, which then leads to earning the Master license. Master: Requires 4 credits (60 CPD hours) every 5 years. KANSAS SEA Credential: Conditional School Specialist License: Requires the following: --Graduate degree from a regionally accredited college --Completion of a graduate level state-approved program --3.25 cumulative grade point average in graduate coursework --Recency- meaning the applicant must have at least 8 credit hours or 1 year of accredited experience completed within the last 6 years --Passing score (157) on the Praxis II --Professional School Specialist License: The applicant must hold a currently valid conditional school specialist license. While holding the conditional license the specialist must complete a supervised internship through a Kansas college while employed as a school specialist. Continuing Education Requirements: University Credit: 6 semester hours of additional recent college credit from a regionally accredited college or university within the 6-year period prior to application for renewal or Inservice or Professional Development Credit: Completion of 120 additional Kansas inservice or professional development hours or Verification of three years of accredited experience during the most recent 5-year Kansas credential and within the 6-year period prior to the application for renewal. This type of experience renewal may be used only twice in the applicant's career and is only available for advanced degrees earned prior to July 1, 2003. Must renew every 5 years. KENTUCKY Accepts NCSP as a route to school based credential. SEA Credential: School Psychologist: Requires a masters or specialist degree and a minimum of 60 graduate semester hours. The NCSP also is accepted as a route to obtaining a school psychologist credential. A Provisional Credential does not require a graduate degree but requires coursework to be completed and a university recommendation. It is 1 year for full-time internship, 2 years for a half-time internship, and it is nonrenewable for completion of internship year. If the internship is not completed in 1 year, the student must petition the Education Professional Standards Board for an extension. Field experience requirements are aligned with NASP standards (minimum of 1200 hour internship, with at least 600 hours in a school setting). Applicants must also obtain a score of 161 or higher on the Praxis II. Continuing Education Requirements: 72 hours of continuing professional development, or 6 graduate hours and 3 years of practice, every 5 years. NASP-approved continuing professional development hours are accepted towards renewal. Scope of Practice: The SEA credential does not allow for private practice outside the schools. To practice outside of schools, one must apply through the Kentucky Board of Examiners of Psychologists or the Kentucky Board of Licensed Professional Counselors. LOUISIANA Accepts NCSP as a route to school based credential and satisfies renewal requirements. SEA Credential: Provisional Certificate: The Provisional Certificate is issued for 1 year and is renewable once, unless due to lapse, under the following conditions: --Completed academic preparation in a school psychology training program that meets the requirements of theStandards for Training Programs in School Psychology, except for the internship. Issued to persons whose credential has lapsed and who have not met the requirements for renewal. This type of provisional credential is not renewable. Standard Certificate: The Standard Certificate is issued for 5 years (renewable) upon the applicant's meeting the following requirements: --Completion of a school psychology training program in Louisiana, which meets the requirements of theStandards for Training Programs in School Psychology. --Completion of academic preparation in school psychology in another state and submission of academic preparation, as evaluated by the Bureau of Higher Education and Teacher Certification, judged to meet the requirements of the Standards for Training Programs in School Psychology. Current NCSP. **There are two levels of Standard Certificates: Level A: Issued to applicants who meet the requirements for the Standard Certificate and who possess a doctoral degree (such as PhD, EdD, or PsyD) in psychology from a regionally accredited institution. Level B: Issued to applicants who meet the requirements for the Standard Certificate and who possess a master's or specialist degree from a school psychology training program in a regionally accredited institution. MAINE Accepts NCSP as a route to school based credential and satisfies renewal requirements Graduation from a program approved by NASP or APA meets one of three requirements for credentialing SEA Credential: School Psychologist – Specialist: Graduate training at the specialist level under one of the four pathways. School Psychologist – Doctoral: Graduate training at the doctoral level under one of the four pathways. Four pathways exist to obtain a school psychologist credential: --Hold the NCSP and possess two recommendations from credentialed providers of school psychological services. --Have a degree in school psychology from a program approved by NASP or APA at the time the degree was awarded and possess two recommendations. --Hold a valid license from the Maine Board of Examiners of Psychologists and possess two recommendations outlining experience in school psychology. --Have completed graduate work in school psychology that is determined by the commissioner to be substantially similar to the programs referred to programs approved by NASP or APA.
