Water Detected on Europa木卫二含有水 • In the January 25, 2014 issue of Science News, there is an article written by Andrew Grant about the discovery of water on Europa. There is nothing exciting about it, because water exists practically in all planets in various forms. Instruments can also detect “protein fragments that could indicate the presence of microbes.” That is indeed speculation. Protein formation is hard to come by even given the entire age of the universe. Let us give glory to God the Creator. 10/20/2014 2

Relic of Early Universe Spotted早期宇宙的遗物 • This is the title of an article written by Christopher Crockett in the January 25, 2014 issue of the Science News. It says, “Just over 230 million light-years away in the Perseus cluster, the galaxy NGC 1277 formed all of its stars in a quick burst roughly 10 billion years ago—less than 4 billion years after the Big Bang. Then it appears to have abruptly switched off.” • Although the distances of galaxies can be determined using various methods within experimental errors and assumptions, the ages of galaxies are based on unverifiable assumptions. Readers need to know those assumptions, otherwise it becomes brainwashing. Every method requires some assumptions otherwise no numerical values can be generated. Boneless Head Crest is a First for Dinosaurs去骨头冠是恐龙第一次 • This is the title of a news item in the January 25, 2014 issue of Science News by Susan Milius. It ends with the remarks that “E. regalis was a plant eater that lived about 70 million to 65 million years ago. Bell suspects the fleshy head ornament signaled social status or sex appeal or both.” • Does anyone know something that happened 70 million years ago? All these millions of years are based on unverifiable assumptions. It is a belief system. Without assumptions, no numerical values are possible. Let us give all glory to God. 10/20/2014 8

The Long and Winding Colorado River 漫长而曲折的科罗拉多河 • This is the title of a feature article in the January 25, 2014 issue of Science News. After admitting that its origin is one the biggest geological mysteries of the American West, it describes a debate of the age of the river by two rival groups of geologists. One claims that it is about 6 million years ago, and the other group claims that it is about 70 million years ago. They based on the interpretation of the amount of fission tracks on the mineral apatite. If the mineral is found deep inside the crust, there would be fewer fission tracks because of higher temperatures. Colder rocks have more fission tracks. 10/20/2014 11

The Long and Winding Colorado River 漫长而曲折的科罗拉多河 • Actually, the amount of fission tracks is dependent on the amount of uranium decay. More decays imply more fission tracks. The article gives the impression that more decays at the surface than deep down the crust of the earth. This would mean that uranium decays a lot more on the surface than deep down in the crust. Another way to interpret these is that decay rates depend on the depth of the mineral. Of course, this is contrary to what most geologists believe. The bottom line is fission tracks depend on temperatures. Well, then, fission track dating will not give an age unless it is calibrated with either U-Th-Pb, K-Ar, Ar-Ar, or Rb-Sr methods. All these methods are based on unverifiable assumptions. It is easier and simpler to trust what the Bible says. 10/20/2014 12

Trackway in Jurassic Rocks Defies Evolution 侏罗世岩脚迹违抗进化 • In the Creation Matters Jan/Feb issue, there is an article on “Unique Trackway in Middle Jurassic Rocks Defies Evolution” written by Terry P. Beh • The author found these animal tracks “do not lie on a single layer or bedding plane of sediment but ascend vertically, crossing a number of distinct depositional layers” as shown in a color photo. “The presence of these tracks contradicts the uniformitarian belief that the formation is eolian, wind-formed, and took a long time to form.” • “Museum information stated that the tracksite was found in 206 to 180 million-year-old Wingate Sandstone in the vicinity of Gateway, Colorado.” 10/20/2014 15

Trackway in Jurassic Rocks Defies Evolution 侏罗世岩脚迹违抗进化 • The best candidates for the Slick Rock footprints are Seitaad and Sarahsaurus. “Of these two basal sauropodomorphs, because its fossils are nearest to them in both physical (southern Utah) and geological (Navajo Formation) proximity, Seitaad is probably the most likely Slick Rock footprint maker.” • “This trackway suggests that the current interpretation of these strata, both in duration of emplacement and paleo-environment, is incorrect.” 10/20/2014 16

Trackway in Jurassic Rocks Defies Evolution 侏罗世岩脚迹违抗进化 • “Trackway morphology indicates that all four beds were unlithified at the same time, which suggests that they all were rapidly deposited. The distinct track preservation also suggests they were lithified quickly enough to preserve the footprints. Furthermore, the preservation of the surrounding sediment, and the presence of mud up-push all strongly imply an environment other than eolian. … this rare and unusual trackway points to sediments deposited during flooding. The areal extent of the Entrada and Junction Creek formations over many thousands of square miles further indicates a large event.” 10/20/2014 17

YEC stands for Young Earth Creation. • Dr. Lightner has spent many years of working with domestic animals. In 2006, she predicted that “a mechanism exists for germ-line mutations (i.e., changes in the DNA sequence which are inheritable) in response to environmental signals.” She tested this idea using a gene involved in pigmentation (MC1R), and genes associated with immune function (MHC genes). 10/20/2014 20

Consideration of the MC1R gene in light of the Flood bottleneck suggests several important points. First, there is clearly more variation in this gene today than can be attributed to the limited number of ancestors on the Ark… • “Secondly, this gene codes for a single protein which can be modified without causing serious damage. Clearly that was no accident. These changes can be adaptive and contribute to interesting variety within kinds. It seemed clear that I was seeing evidence of God’s provision in this gene in that it was designed to be able to change in useful ways. 10/20/2014 21

However, this is not lethal or debilitating. In fact, red hair in humans and Irish setters is from mutation resulting in a non-functional MC1R protein. So there is no reason to believe natural selection is the explanation for this bias towards in-frame mutations. Further investigation into other variable genes has shown similar patterns that don’t fit well with the standard neo-Darwinian explanation. (Lightner, 2009a)” 10/20/2014 22

In other words, neo-Darwinian mechanisms fail to explain these patterns. There are two problems: (1) it is known that mutations do not occur randomly, and (2) natural selection is not as powerful in the real world as it is in evolutionary story-telling. • “My doubts about natural selection are tied to my familiarity with ‘artificial’ selection, particularly as it applies to livestock. Many genetic diseases are recessive, and there is not an obvious problem if an animal has only one mutated gene. In these cases it is almost impossible to eliminate the deleterious allele from the herd based on how the animal looks or behaves. In the same way, natural selection is not a mechanism by which recessive deleterious alleles can be eliminated. … 10/20/2014 23

However, when more one trait is desired, progress is significantly slowed…. • “Mathematically, it has been shown that natural selection is not effective at eliminating most deleterious mutations or preserving beneficial ones. Most mutations entering a population are lost due to genetic drift, even when they are beneficial. For those mutations surviving the effects of drift, they must have dramatic effects on fitness for natural selection to significantly impact their frequency in the population. 10/20/2014 24

Since most mutations are near neutral (i.e., they do not have dramatic effects on fitness) and natural selection has little effect on them, the deleterious mutations are fixed with much greater frequency than are beneficial ones, and this occurs largely by genetic drift (Rupe and Sanford, 2013). 10/20/2014 25

When examined in depth, it appears these mechanisms have little to do with reality. From a biblical worldview, it is clear that the adaptive mutations have arisen. It is also clear that in most cases, at least in mammals, if the mutations arise purely by chance they will not occur in a timely fashion, and natural selection is not a mechanism that can effectively fix them in a population. This is exciting, because it means the mechanisms by which life has adapted as creatures have filled the earth will point more clearly to our awesome Creator… 10/20/2014 26

It seemed obvious to me that interpreting the current genetic data within a biblical framework led to the conclusion that such a phenomenon exists. • “Upon further reflection, I realized that homologous recombination may explain some changes. Crossing over occurs during meiosis (gamete formation), and can change the nucleotide sequence in a gene. Unequal crossing over may result in duplication or deletion of segments of DNA. Gene conversion, where the sequence on one chromosome was ‘written over’ the corresponding sequence on the other, could affect the frequency of an allele. In fact, I had predicted that gene conversion may have been involved in increasing the adaptive alleles in leaf-eating monkeys…. 10/20/2014 27

What is clear is that certain enzymes are required for these processes, so they appear designed, as opposed to the naturalistic proposal that they are haphazard accidents. I also found it exciting to learn that biased gene conversion has been documented in mammals. In mice the double stranded break initiating homologous recombination occurred more commonly at one allele, leading to an over-transmission of the other. This is a designed mechanism by which an allele can become more frequent in a population. The Testimony of Fire Ants 红火蚁的见证 • In the Jan/Feb issue of Creation Matters, Timothy R. Stout has an article on the subject. He reported that the red imported fire ants (RIFA) have intriguing cooperative behavior. They can link together to form a large ball of ants and can be poured out from a teapot like liquid. The ball could act as a solid on the table. They can float on water, and if damaged, can self-heal. “The communication algorithms between ants are still a mystery, but are under study at the Ant Lab at Georgia Institute of Technology. Nathan Mlot, a recent doctoral graduate from the School of Mechanical Engineering at GT spent five years developing his dissertation on the swarm intelligence that emerges from the cooperative behavior of fire ant self-assemblages. He hopes that what he learned can lead to the development of novel ‘active materials’ which can be applied to the real world engineering problems—from modular robots that can self-assemble into larger functioning structures using micro components, to concrete bridges that repair themselves. 10/20/2014 31

The Testimony of Fire Ants 红火蚁的见证 • “Mlot’s work is an application of biomimicry, ‘the design and production of materials, structures, and systems that are modeled on biological entities and processes.’ • “In Romans 1:20, the Bible says that God reveals Himself through the things he has made. Certainly, biomimicry demonstrates this truth very clearly. The organizational details of living organisms are complex beyond comprehension. Even with tens of thousands of the world’s most brilliant scientists studying the structure and function of living organisms, over many, many years, we merely find out more things we don’t yet understand. 10/20/2014 32

It is foolish to think that random actions could provide the creative genius which is demonstrated in living organisms. Even the study of ant balls bears testimony of God’s unfathomable wisdom and insight. • “An atheist may claim that the origin of life was brought about by random, naturalistic, evolutionary processes, but anytime he tries to prove his claim with a detailed flowchart of chemical reactions, all he finds are roadblocks. Believers have been quick to appreciate and recognize the testimony of God provided by biomimicry. Surely, a person is without excuse who cannot see the hand of God in the design of biological systems.” • Thank God for Timothy Stout’s contribution to Creation. 10/20/2014 33

Seahorse’s No Wake Zone 海马的没有唤醒区 • In the Jan/Feb 2014 issue of Creation Matters, Dr. Jonathan O’Quinn has an article on seahorse’s feeding behavior. • “The student of creation might everywhere see in nature evidences of intelligent design in living things, special properties of living things that defy any attempt to explain their existence as the result of random chance… • “Some marine fish feed on tiny crustaceans known as ‘copepods,’ including the majestic seahorse, whose tiny mouth is perfectly suited for such small prey. However, copepods are sensitive to the least disturbance created in the water by an approaching predator, reacting within 2 to 3 milliseconds. They then swim away quickly, at a velocity equivalent to that of an adult person swimming at 2,000 mph. 10/20/2014 36

Seahorse’s No Wake Zone 海马的没有唤醒区 • “…the snout of the seahorse is uniquely shaped, and as it approaches a copepod, water moves around its snout in such a way that no waves are created, allowing the seahorse to move to within about 1 mm of the copepod. The seahorse then quickly raises its head and draws water (and the unsuspecting copepod) into its mouth, all within about 1 millisecond. These amazing fish also maintain a 90% rate of prey capture, thus wasting little energy on missed attempts. • “Logic suggests that this feeding ability had to be present at the beginning for these fish to survive. Was this design the handiwork of an intelligent Creator, or did this unique feature evolve completely by accident over vast periods of time? The reader is asked to consider which viewpoint requires more faith.” Thank God for Dr. O’Quinn’s contribution to design in nature. 10/20/2014 37

The Illogic of Anti-Creationism不合逻辑的反创造论 • In the Creation 35(4) 2013 issue, Dr. Jonathan Sarfati wrote an editorial on “The Illogic of Anti-Creationism.” • He quoted G.K. Chesterton: “As I read and re-read all the non-Christian or anti-Christian account of the faith…a slow and awful impression grew gradually but graphically upon my mind—the impression that Christianity must be a most extraordinary thing. For not only (as I understood) has Christianity the most flaming vices, but it had apparently a mystical talent for combining vices which seemed inconsistent with each other. It was attacked on all sides and for all contradictory reasons. No sooner had one rationalist demonstrated that it was too far to the east than another demonstrated with equal clearness that it was much too far to the west.” 10/20/2014 40

The Illogic of Anti-Creationism不合逻辑的反创造论 • Dr. Sarfati further said that “they proved Christianity was ‘a thing of inhuman gloom’, but then they proved Christianity ‘was a great deal too optimistic.’ Christianity supposedly caused overpopulation by ‘Go forth and multiply’ (Gen 1:28), but then it was supposedly anti-sex. Chesterton said: “Or, again, certain phrases in the Epistles or the marriage service, were said by the anti-Christians to show contempt for woman’s intellect. But I found that the anti-Christians themselves had a contempt for woman’s intellect; for it was their great sneer at the Church on the Continent that ‘only women’ went to it.” • “So Chesterton concluded that either Christianity was very wrong indeed, if mutually incompatible objections can be hurled at it—or it was the one right belief system with the proper balance.” 10/20/2014 41

The Illogic of Anti-Creationism不合逻辑的反创造论 • “We see the same attacks today against consistent Christianity—creation as Christ proclaimed. For example, creation is ‘unscientific’ because ‘the basic proposals of creation science are not subject to test and verification.’ But in the same breath, the critics tell us ‘scientists from many fields have examined these ideas and have found them to be scientifically insupportable’. But how could creation both have been ‘examined’ (i.e., tested) if its ideas are ‘not subject to test’? Also, atheists claim that we should accept only scientifically testable claims—but that claim is not scientifically testable. 10/20/2014 42

Creationists often counter with someone with high scientific qualifications and important contributions to science who does believe in creation and disbelieves evolution. But then the evolutionist iterates, ‘But no true scientist doubts evolution’, which even deserves the name, the ‘No True Scientist Fallacy’. 10/20/2014 43

The Illogic of Anti-Creationism不合逻辑的反创造论 • “The evolutionists accuse creationists of ‘lying’, without evidence. Yet they go on to proclaim that lying is the result of evolution. Many evolutionists also claim that all belief systems should be explained by evolutionary survival, so we can dismiss their truth claims. But then, their own evolutionary belief system should also be explained by evolution, not by its own truth claims. • “Evolutionary belief leads to contradictions of its own: we evolved by survival of the fittest, in a ruthless struggle for existence, eliminating our competitors. “Flowing Blood” Found in Frozen Mammoth “流动的血液”在冷冻猛犸象找到 • In the Creation 35(4) 2013 issue, there is an article on the blood of frozen mammoth. • “Russian scientists have recovered blood from a woolly mammoth so well preserved that hopes of obtaining viable DNA for ‘cloning’ the extinct species have surged again. The blood was in ice cavities below its belly and flowed freely when these were broken with a pick. The find was announced by the expedition’s head, Dr. Semyon Grigoriev, chairman of the Museum of Mammoths at Russia’s North Eastern Federal University. Scientists from the Russian Geographical Society were also involved. 10/20/2014 47

“Flowing Blood” Found in Frozen Mammoth “流动的血液”在冷冻猛犸象找到 • “This mammoth is believed to be 10,000 to 15,000 years old. This is still the most common sort of timeframe given for mammoth extinction, despite long-standing secular suggestions that in some places they survived till around 4,000 years ago. Of course, a post-Flood biblical Ice Age scenario for the freezing, less than 4,000 years ago, seems much more believable in the light of this find. In fact, even that seems a long time for something to last ‘in the freezer’, as every housewife will attest. The fact that the blood remained liquid even at subzero temperatures in the lab has revived discussion about mammoth blood containing special ‘antifreeze’ proteins. 10/20/2014 48
