Phonics – Letters and Sounds Phase Three Consonant digraphs – ch, sh, th, ng Vowel graphemes – ai, ee, igh, oa, oo (long and short), ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er Children are taught these in order through a variety of activities and games Children generate and spell words for each one
Phonics – Letters and Sounds Phase Four Revision phase Ensures all children get full coverage and an opportunity to review any difficult areas Allows children progressing through any class combination to be taught all sounds in the phases
Phonics – Letters and Sounds Phase Five and Six Grouping the alternatives together for each phoneme – i.eai can also be ay, a-e, ea, aigh, eigh, ey (rain, day, lane, great, straight, eight, they) Prefix, suffix, teaching strategies to help with difficult words
Phonics Screening Check For all pupils in Year 1 Administered in June Pass or Fail Any pupils who fail will be tested again at the end of Year 2
Writing Full sentences Talk for writing – Talk Topics Add interest The man ran to his house. The tall, young man ran quickly to his large, red house. Sentence starters Conjunctions Complete texts – the more they read the better their vocabulary and writing imagination will be.
