  1. Chapter 9 Sample Problems

  2. Sample Problem #1 • Write the word equation for the reaction of methane gas with oxygen gas to form carbon dioxide and water. • Methane + oxygen  carbon dioxide + water

  3. Sample Problem #2 • Interpret the following equation: • 2NaI + Cl2 2NaCl + I2 • 2 formula units NaI react with 1 molecule of chlorine to produce 2 formula units NACl and 1 molecule of Iodine.

  4. Sample Problem 3 • Determine whether the following equation is balanced. • 2Na + H2O  2NaOH + H2 • Solution Reactants Products • Atoms Na 2 2 • Atoms H 2 2 +2 = 4 • Atoms O 1 2

  5. Sample Problems 4 • Write a balanced equation for the reaction between chlorine and sodium bromide to produce bromine and sodium chloride. • Step 1 Wrie a word equation for the reaction • Chlorine + sodium bromide  bromine and sodium chloride • Step 2 Write the correct formulas:

  6. 4 (cont) • Cl2 + NaBr Br2 + NaCl • Step 3 Determine the coefficient that make the equation balance. • Cl2 + 2NaBr  Br2 + 2NaCl

  7. Sample Problem 5 • Write the balanced equation for the reaction between Aluminum sulfate and calcium chloride to produce aluminum chloride and a white precipitate of calcium sulfate. • Step 1 Write the word equation • Aluminimum sulfate and calcium chloride gives us aluminum chloride and calcium sulfate.

  8. 5 (cont) • Step 2 Replace the words in the word equation with the correct formulas. Al3(SO4)3 + CaCl2 AlCl3 + CaSO4

  9. 5 (cont) • Step 3: Adjust the coefficients to make the equation balanced. • Al2(SO4)3 + 3CaCl2 2AlCl3 + 3CaSO4
