Why Study Foreign Language?What’s in it for you? • Promotes higher SAT scores • Increases study/travel abroad opportunities • Improves employment potential • Increases global understanding • Increases likelihood of getting into college • Strengthens knowledge of English language • Sharpens thinking, interpersonal, and life skills • AP credit for college • Increases understanding of one’s own culture

  6. LCHS Course Selection Recommendations • The student should have a C average or better to advance to the next level. • Student should seek current teacher’s recommendation before advancing to the next level. • Communication with teachers, parents, and guidance counselors is key.

  7. Graduation Requirements In order to graduate with an advanced diploma a student must have at least 3 years of one language or 2 years of 2 languages. For example, Dan takes Spanish 1, 2 and 3 and Stephanie takes Latin 1 and 2 and German 1 and 2. Both will receive advanced diplomas. Joanne takes French 1 – 6 AP and gets into Yale!

  8. College Requirements • Please know that some upper echelon schools (UVA, William and Mary) expect a minimum of 4 years of 1 language. • Virginia state schools MUST accept ASL as a foreign language. Check for policies with out-of-state institutions before applying.

  9. Foreign Language Opportunities By taking Foreign language you are afforded the opportunity to participate in a Foreign Language Honor Society: • SociétéHonoraire de Français • Deutsche Ehrenverbindung • Scholae Latina SocietasHonoris • Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica You can also apply to a Governor’s School or StarTalk Academy. • French • Spanish • Latin • German • Japanese • Arabic • Russian • Chinese
