No. 1 Dear Editor: I am a student at Nanjing University of China. As a regular goer to the university library's newspaper room, I have discovered that many students like reading newspapers in English, especially China Daily. The reason that China Daily is popular among students is not difficult to explain. A major characteristic of China Daily is the conciseness of its articles. Most of the articles are brief, clearly written and informative. Many students are busy with their studies and don't have much spare time. However, by reading China Daily, readers get up-to-date news about China and the world and enhance their reading capabilities at the same time and, more importantly, it doesn't cost them a lot of time. In this sense, China Daily also helps its readers improve their writing skills. For those students who find English compositions difficult, articles on China Daily serve as perfect examples.
NO.2 In recent years more and more homes are being pushed outwards as the activities of business, government and pleasure tend to be concentrated in the centers of the cities. Although most people are reluctant to move to the outskirts of the cities, I feel like living in the suburbs. It is true that the city can provide much convenience and entertainment; the very reason people can't bear to part with city life. But the cost for the privilege of living in the city is also high. Just think of the places where we live, full of petrol fumes and toxic gases, torn by the roar of buses and lorries day and night, and thronged ceaselessly by great crowds. Besides, as the housing problem in the city gets more serious, people have to pay high rents for very tiny flats which I would certainly disdain to live in. In contrast, living near the countryside one can enjoy the clean atmosphere, the closeness to nature and the quiet, peaceful surroundings--the essentials of a healthy life.
NO.3 Dear Prospective Students, After three years’ struggle on study, you are qualified to enter West Anhui University for different reasons, but whatever reasons, you clearly know that you are still on the way to your ideal. Here I represent all the teachers to welcome you and give you some advice. First, it’s difficult to have a good result but easy to get a bad one. You should never delay or give up your study. You seem to have fever problems now, but you have to study positively. No one will change you except yourself. Second, you should develop good habits in your college life. You are far away from your parents and some of you may gradually be addicted to smoking, overdrinking or the Internet games. So it’s time for us to make a good control and take good care of ourselves. In university, one of the most important things you should learn is how to get along well with others, which would directly influence your interpersonal relationship in the future.
NO.4 Ladies and gentlemen, Welcome to Kunmin, a beautiful city of eternal spring. My name is Tom, and I am pleased to be your tour guide. So I am very delighted to have this chance to serve you, to show you the most beautiful of Kunmin and Yunnan, to feed you the most delicious local food, to introduce to you the most precious local specialities. In one word, I’ll try my best to help you have a happy and gainful tour here. Now, you must want to know some general information about this city. Situated at the center of Yungui Plateau, Kunmin has a history of over 2400 years and now serves as the capital of Yunnan Province. It features pleasant climate all the year round and various natural sceneries as well as places of historical interest.

NO.6 Dear editors: I can't agree with your editorial writer's praise of the automated collection bus as "a great advance in technology" and "a sign of a highly civilized society". On the contrary, I believe that this kind of bus won't work in our nation, at least in our city of Shanghai. Automated collection buses don't fit the socioeconomic circumstances of our country. To judge a particular technology, appropriateness is a sole criterion. That's to say, any technology introduced or solution adopted should take into account the unique economic, ecological, cultural and social conditions within which a specific problem exists. For example, bicycles can provide more efficient transportation than automobiles in congested cities, and "barefoot doctors" in large rural areas may meet more health needs than highly sophisticated hospitals. The same applies to automated collection buses. In a labor-rich country where more and more people are laid off because there are not enough jobs available, people-oriented machines are more suitable than technology-oriented ones.
NO.7Ladies and gentlemen, Happy Spring Festival! It is the lunar New Year in China today and I’m so glad to introduce some traditional customs to all the friends from all parts of the world. The Chinese mark the year in a 12—year cycle , in which each year is named after an animal, such as the Rat, the Tiger ,the Pig and the Dragon. 2002,the Year of Horse, is an energetic time which is believed to bring about success and achievements. On the eve of the Spring Festival, all the family members come together for a feast. Early the next morning, children greet their parents and are likely to get presents from them. Then the family goes from door to door to visit their relatives, friends and neighbors. Quite often, the older relatives give the child a red envelop with money inside. Why red? This is because in the Chinese culture, the colors Red is lucky and is used for happy occasions, say, the many present here are dressed in red, too. In closing, I wish all of you good health and the very best of luck in the coming year!
NO.8 President, members of the faculty, college staff, fellow graduates, family and friends, let me begin by thanking you all for being here today. To the outside world, it appears that a college student earns his or her degree independently and alone, I know from my own experience that getting from registration to graduation requires a lot of help, support and encouragement. Thank you to my mentor, John Smith, who was never too busy to be a cheerleader as well as a guide. Thank you to my tutors for taking me on the most enjoyable journey of my life. Thank you to the staff of the Center for Distance Learning; many students here can attest to your kindness and your diligence. Thank you to the students who joined me in my online courses. Your contributions made even the hardest subjects easier to get through. And thank you to my family who celebrated each victory with me and encouraged me when I was too tired to encourage myself.

NO.11 Ladies and gentlemen, Today, we meet here for the first time. On the basis of equality and in a friendly manner, we will exchange views on cooperation in a wide range of areas and on the building of a new Asia-Europe partnership. It is a pioneering endeavor of historic significance. It reflects the widely-shared desire of Asian and European countries for world peace and development and for inter-continental exchanges and cooperation. It signifies the growth of Asia and the profound changes in the entire international relations, and marks a growing trend toward multi-polarity. I am convinced that this meeting will have a positive impact on the shaping of a new world pattern. I wish to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks to the Royal Government of the Kingdom of Thailand for hosting this meeting successfully.
NO.12 On behalf of our group, I would like to thank you for all that you have done for us. Ever since we arrived, we have enjoyed nothing but the warmest friendship and hospitality. Finally, please allow me to propose a toast to the health and happiness of all the ladies and gentlemen present here.
NO.13 Dear boys and girls, Good afternoon! As you know, I’ve just come back from the recent travel around the world. I’m very pleased to be here to tell you about some interesting countries, cities and towns. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is so famous that many visitors to Italy want to see it. The round tower where Galileo once had his famous experiment is more than 800 years old .Due to the safety reasons; it was closed 12years ago. Fortunately, the repair to the Learning Tower of Pisa has completed this year and visitors can be permitted to climb to the top。 When I strolled in Paris, to tell you the truth, I really had a headache of the dog shit everywhere. In my next lecture, you will travel together with me to the Philippines; to experience Flowers of May there .Your attendance is most welcome.
NO.14 China, one of the cradles of human civilization, possesses so many treasures with Chinese characteristics that numerous foreign friends come to visit her. The first place to go to is the Great Wall, which is the symbol of China and one of the seven wonders in the world. What’s more, it is said to be the only construction that can be seen from the outer space. In the imperial periods, it was used in defense of the dynasties. Since liberation, it has become a place of interest. There is a famous saying: “He who does not reach the Great Wall isn’t a true man.” China is home to Panda, an animal with only two colors, white and black, but very cute. It’s our national treasure, often functioning as a friendly diplomat. Terracotta-clay warriors unearthed in Xi’an, a famous ancient city-ware sculptured in Qin Dynasty, the first dynasty of China. When former U.S. President Clinton came to China, he visited terracotta’s first. The above mentioned are just a wave of the sea. If you want to know more about this ancient nation, come and be our guest.
NO.15 Welcome to the Beijing Martial Art Palace to practice martial art for body—building. But I have no intention of persuading anyone, and am not prepared to convince anyone, either. You know, exercising for your health and fitness is a matter of personal choice; it’s an investment for one’s future. Of course, if you’re looking for a place where you can build up your body, reduce your weight, make new friends and learn about Chinese culture, this is the very place for you. All you need to do is to fill out a form and get a membership card. It takes only a few minutes. Here you want to enjoy and learn this ancient form of combat. The Palace, a creation of the Chinese Martial Art Association puts on fabulous performances to thrill the visitor—not only martial artists in action but also Peking Opera and acrobatics’ shows. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the place for you, and we are here for you.
NO.16 Ladies and gentlemen, let me begin by sharing with you the current state of world tourism today. 2008 represented a milestone year for tourism. I am so glad to have you with us in Shanghai in this golden autumn for a review of the meeting. Allow me to express, on behalf of the Chinese Government, our warm welcome to all of you. As you have seen for yourselves, Shanghai is a dynamic city and a symbol of the rapid economic and social development in China. It is making rapid progress .The ancient “Oriental Pearl” is shining more splendidly in the new century. The past decade is also one of rapid expansion of cooperation and remarkable achievements of APEC. There is no doubt that APEC has become one of the most important economic meetings in the region and even in the world. It has provided rare opportunities for dialogue and exchange of views by leaders of member economies and for discussions on issues related to the global and regional economy.
NO.17 Distinguished Delegates, Ladies and Gentlemen, It is my great pleasure to extend a very warm welcome to you all from this important International Conference on Cultural Tourism and Local Communities-- one of the UNWTO’s first major events this year in Asia. It is indeed most appropriate that we meet today in the city of Hong Kong to discuss the issues of tourism. Hong Kong, like China as a whole, has one of the richest and most diverse cultural heritages of the world. Moreover, it is linked with the historical sites, some of the most precious treasures of mankind and the world’s most renowned tourism attractions. Indeed, it is not by sheer coincidence that Hong Kong was chosen as the host venue for several international conferences regarding cultural tourism development in recent years.
NO.18 Distinguished guests, Ladies and gentlemen, It gives me great pleasure to attend this annual meeting on China Day. I’d like, on behalf of the Chinese government, to welcome all the guests and friends from every part of Asia. As the biggest continent on the earth, Asia takes up 60% of its population. It has rich resources, a long history and brilliant culture. With its profound changes and rise in the last century, Asia wrote a glorious chapter of development. China is an Asia country. Over the past two decades. China has achieved rapid economic growth thanks to its reform and opening –up policy. China’s entry to WTO represents the new starting point for its opening to the outside world .We will lower our tariffs and participate in worldwide economic cooperation and competition in more areas. China will open its door still wider to the rest of Asia and the world. China’s reform, opening up and modernization cause will not bring great benefits to the Chinese people, but also offer many business opportunities and promote economic cooperation in Asia and around the word. Thank you!
NO.19 Respected President, Dear faculty and students, I’m so grateful for the hospitality and honored for the reception your great university. Thank you for welcoming me as well as my entire party. My visit comes on an important anniversary. Thirty years ago this week an American president arrived in China on a trip to end decades of estrangement and centuries of suspicion. President Richard and Nixon showed the world that two vastly different governments could meet on the grounds of common interest in the spirit of mutual respect. His handshake with China came over the vastest ocean in the world. America and China have exchanged many handshakes of friendship and commerce during the 30years. Now we have had more contact with each other and the citizens of both countries have gradually learned more about each other. Thank you very much!
NO.20 Welcome to Edinburgh, the Chinese Provincial tourist service delegation. My name is Jane Anderson. I am from the Edinburgh Tourist Center. I will be working as your guide throughout your six-day visit. Ms. Nancy Turner, director of the Edinburgh Tourist Administration will host a reception buffet tomorrow. After the reception dinner, we will show a video entitled “Touring around Edinburgh”, which I believe will give you a bird’s-eye view of the tourist attractions and the services provided in Edinburgh and its surrounding areas. I remember in a poem addressed to a departing friend, one of your Tang poets said: Provided our friend survives, distance means very little; although dwelling on far horizons, we can still be as near neighbors. His words apply to nations too. I’m happy to be able to work with you in the following days and to help contribute to our friendship.
NO.21 Good morning, everybody, Today I’ll give you a brief account of the development of telecommunication in Shanghai. In 1995, Shanghai became the first city in China to have 8-digit phone numbers. By the end of 1999, the total volume of the telephone switchboard had exceeded 4.5 million sets, and private telephone lines topped over 3.5 million, while mobile phone numbers kept well over 300 thousand. At present, Shanghai has phone connections with more than 100 countries and regions. Shanghai also went ahead of all cities in China in the field of Internet development and Internet services. The speed of Internet accession has greatly improved because of new technologies such as broadband link and ADSL. As a new and thriving industry, the future of Shanghai’s telecommunication industry is very promising.
NO.22 Dear boys and girls, welcome to Weather on the Air! You must have heard a lot of new words in our weather reports and we may wonder what they really mean. Now, I will give you a brief introduction. We have seen several kinds of rain in our daily life. Usually we call all of them “rain", but actually there are differences among them. So, today, I want to talk about the kinds of rain which are often appearing in weather forecasts. A "drizzle" is a very small rain with tiny rain drops; A "shower" is a sudden rain that ends up quickly and may come again sometime unknown; A "storm" is a heavy rain always comes with wind. That's all. If you want to learn more, I suggest you to watch weather report on CCTV 9 every day. Thank you for listening.
NO.23 Good morning, everyone. I am very glad to have the opportunity to have a speech here. The topic of my speech is "How to improve our oral English?” I think the first thing that we should do is to overcome ourselves, for we are so nervous or shy to express ourselves. We are afraid to make mistakes, so we’d prefer to say nothing rather than speak English incorrectly, and then we lose a lot of opportunities. The second thing we should do is to communicate with other people frequently. You are lucky to have good teachers and sincere friends; they will encourage you when you lose heart. Sincere advice will give you great courage to go on it, and they also can point out your mistakes you made. Just speaking it loudly and with self-confidence, you can do it perfectly! That’s all, thanks for your attention!
NO.24 Good afternoon, honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen! It’s my honor to stand here and give you a short speech, the topic of which is Glory and Dream. In the past 10 years I have concentrated all my efforts on my teaching position with dedication, responsibility and deep love, though sometimes I feel it so hard and so lonely. But every time I see the improvement in the students’ learning, every time I see the progress in the students’ bodies and mind, I feel I am the happiest person in the world. Before finishing my speech, I would like to say, “For us teachers, being serious is our attitude, being professional and practical is the guarantee of our teaching efficiency. For us teachers, devoting to the people’s education is the greatest glory and dream forever. That’s all. Thank you!
