  2. There are many types of heroes.

  3. The Journey • Departure: The hero is called to adventure, although he is reluctant to accept. • Initiation: The hero crosses a threshold into a new, more dangerous world, gaining a more mature perspective. • The Road of Trials: The hero is given supernatural aid, endures tests of strength, resourcefulness, and endurance.

  4. The Journey Cont. • The innermost cave: the hero descends into the innermost cave (the underworld, an actual cave, a forest, or even his / her own mind (really any place dark and scary). This results in a rebirth – physical, emotional, and / or spiritual. • Return and reintegration into society: the hero uses his / her newfound wisdom to restore fertility and order to the land.

  5. The Tragic Hero • The tragic hero is similar to the hero, but instead of return and reintegration . . . • the hero never returns from the innermost cave or tries and is not accepted back into society • and experiences a fall from grace, descending into madness or dying as a result of his flaw. Note: all heroes should have a flaw – it makes them human and relatable.

  6. Some possible characteristics of the journey • The hero is naïve and inexperienced • Meets monsters or monstrous people • Has a strange, wise being as a mentor • Yearns for the lady or man who is sometimes a guide or inspiration • Crosses a body of water or travels on a bridge • Born and raised in a rural setting • Or comes from mysterious origin • Loses parents early and is either oppressed by new family or raised by animals or wise guardian

Cont. • Returns to the land of birth unknown or in disguise • Is special, one of a kind, could represent whole nation or culture • Struggles for something valuable, important • Has help from divine or supernatural forces • Has a guide or guides • Has a flaw resulting in conflict • Undergoes some type of ritual or ceremony

  8. Cont. • Has a loyal band of companions • Makes a stirring speech to the populace or to companions • Engages in tests, contests of strength or mental prowess • Suffers an unhealable wound, sometimes mental that never completely recovers
