    2. Sample Types Grab Composite Integrated Continuous

    3. Grab Sample A discrete sample that is taken at a specific point and time Examples?

    4. Composite Samples A series of grab samples, usually collected at different times and lumped together, are considered composite samples Examples?

    5. Two Types of Composite Samples Time-weighted Composite – a fixed volume of sample is collected at prescribed time intervals in either a large composite bottle or separate bottles for compositing later. Flow-weighted Composite – a sample is taken after a specified volume of flow has passed the monitoring station. Examples?

    6. Integrated Samples A grab sample that accounts for horizontal or vertical variation, but is still a snap-shot in time. For streams: Equal Width Increment (EWI) – this is what it sounds like. Equal Discharge Increment (EDI) – must know flow characteristics of the cross section of the stream . Subsections of the cross section can be sampled to account for flow-induced variability. Examples?

    7. Integrated Samples For standing water or wells: Depth Integrated Sample – can be achieved by sampling each lake strata. The objective is to obtain a representative sample of the entire water column.

    8. Continuous Samples Obtained with automated samplers to assess variables measured using electrometric methods.
