Assumptions • Leadership in the church exists at many levels • Scripture should be our primary guide in working out the principles of leadership • Practical experience and contemporary leadership practice may offer helpful wisdom in how to apply the principles of leadership in our particular context
What leaders are not… • People who are sorted and strong – 2 Corinthians 4:7-12, 11:30, 12:9-10 • Overbearing in authority - Mark 10:35-45 • Sole practitioners of ministry - Ephesians 4:11-13
What leaders are… • The servants of all – Mark 10:35-45 • Nurturers and developers of ministry - Ephesians 4:11-13 • Disciple-makers who share their lives with those they are seeking to lead • The example of Jesus

Groups: 1 Thess2:1-12 • What principles of missional leadership can we learn from Paul account of his (quite brief) mission in Thessalonica? • What are the nuances of each of the models here: • Brother (1) • Mother (6b-9) • Father (10-12 cf 1 Cor 4:14-17)
Teams that build the church – Eph 4:7-13 Prophet Apostle ? Helper / Administrator? Evangelist Teacher Pastor
Some practical reflections on leadership • Discerning and communicating vision • Leaders need to be excellent and intentional listeners • Being the leaders doesn’t mean you have all the wisdom • It’s difficult to change people if they don’t know that you love them first • Change must be taught before it’s implemented • But God does believe in leadership!
