3 7 7 History ▶Reading Comprehension Microwave Oven In the spring of 1946, Dr. Percy Spencer (1894-1970), an engineer with the Raytheon Corporation, was testing a new vacuum tube called a magnetron. While working with the vacuum tube, he discovered that the candy bar in his pocket melted. After seeing what happened to the candy bar, he tried another experiment. This time, he put some popcorn kernels near the vacuum tube. A few minutes later, the popcorn kernels sputtered, cracked and popped all over his lab. The next morning, Dr. Spencer told one of his colleagues what happened to the popcorn kernels in his lab. His colleague came over to his lab to do an experiment with an egg. They put the vacuum tube near an egg. They were watching what was happening to the egg. The egg began to quake. The temperature within the egg was rapidly rising, which caused tremendous internal pressure. The egg exploded and spattered hot yolk all over their faces. From the experiments with the candy bar, the popcorn kernels and the egg, Dr. Spencer learned low-density microwave energy could be used for cooking. Dr. Spencer built a metal box with an opening. He fed microwave energy into the opening. The energy created in the metal box was unable to escape, creating a higher density electromagnetic field. He put food in the box and fed microwave energy. The temperature of the food rose very rapidly. Dr. Spencer invented the microwave oven that revolutionized cooking. By late 1946, the Raytheon Company filed a patent proposing that microwaves be used to cook food. The company placed an oven that cooked food using microwave energy at a Boston restaurant for testing. In 1947, the first commercial microwave oven hit the market. The first microwave oven was very big and expensive. It stood 5 1/2 feet tall, weighed over 750 pounds and cost about $5,000 each. Dr. Spencer held 150 patents until he died at 76. He was considered one of the world's leading experts in the field of microwave energy. In 1999, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame and took his place with such great inventors as Thomas Edison, the Wright Brothers and George Washington Carver. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article.
