How to make measurement unit conversions by: Gerry Garcia & Matt Hall
Main Menu Introduction How to…. The AU The Solar System Let’s Practice Quiz Time
Why do we convert units? Not all measurements are done with the same unit seconds minutes Hours
Why do we convert units? • Some units are too small to measure big things • Some units are too big to measure small things
Why do we convert units? Measurements that are very big or very small are more difficult to work with 0.0000000000764 X 0.000321 = ? 654,321,000,000,000,000 / 12 = ? 0.0000345 / 21,000,000= ? 142,000,000,000 X 62,000,000 = ?
Why do we convert units? Comparing measurements is much easier when the same unit is used 3 miles > or < 9 km? 9 lbs or 200 oz? Is 3800 seconds more than 1 hour? Is 4 tons a lot of grams? You’re how many minutes old?
How to calculate Measurement Conversions Click here next slide
The first thing you need to decide is are you converting in the Metric system or Customary system of measure. Click here next slide
The second thing you need to know is are you converting : Length, Volume & Capacity, Weight & Mass, or Time. Click here next slide
How to Menu Metric System Customary System Length Length Volume & Capacity Volume & Capacity Weight & Mass Weight & Mass Time Examples
If you are converting length in the Metric System here are some things you need to know. • 10 millimeters (mm) = 1 centimeter (cm) • 100 centimeters (cm) = 1 meter (m) • 1,000 meters (m) = 1 kilometer (km) Back to Menu
If you are converting volume & capacity in the Metric System here are some things you need to know. • 1,000 milliliters (mL) = 1 liter (L) • 1,000 liters (L) = 1 kiloliter (kL) Back to Menu
If you are converting weight and mass in the Metric System here are some things you need to know. • 1,000 milligrams (mg) = 1 gram (g) • 1,000 grams (g) = 1 kilogram (kg) • 1,000 kilograms (kg) = 1 metric ton (t) Back to Menu
If you are converting length in the Customary System here are some things you need to know. • 12 inches (in) = 1 foot (ft) • 3 feet (ft) = 1 yard (yd) • 5,280 feet (ft) = 1 mile (mi) Back to Menu
If you are converting volume & capacity in the Customary System here are some things you need to know. • 8 fluid ounces (fl oz) = 1 cup (c) • 2 cups (c) = 1 pint (pt) • 2 pints (pt)= 1 quart (qt) • 4 quarts (qt) = 1 gallon (gal) Back to Menu
If you are converting weight & mass in the Customary System here are some things you need to know. • 16 ounces (oz) = 1 pound (lb) • 2,000 pounds (lb) = 1 ton (T) Back to Menu
If you are converting time the measurements are the same in both systems. • 60 seconds (s) = 1 minute (min) • 60 minutes (min) = 1 hour (h) • 24 hours (h) = 1 day (d) • 7 days (d) = 1 week (wk) • 52 weeks (wk) = 1 year (yr) • 12 months (mo) = 1 year (yr) • 365 days (d) = 1 year (yr) Back to Menu
Here is an example It took Sarah’s family 3 days to drive from Meriden, CT. to Miami, Florida. How many hours did it take her family to complete the trip? Click here next slide
Here is an example We know that there are 24 hours in one day. We know it took Sarah’s family 3 days. To figure out how many hours the trip took, we have to multiply 24 by 3. Click anywhere for next step Once you complete the calculation, you find out that Sarah’s family took 72 hours to make the trip. Click for second example
Now you try one. Peter flew from Tampa, Florida, to New York City. His plane left Tampa at 6:34 A.M. and the flight took 3 hours 55 minutes. How many seconds was the flight? Click to solve
How long was Peter’s flight? We know that there are 60 minutes in 1 hour. 3 hours x 60 minutes per hour = 180 minutes. We know that there are 60 seconds in 1 minute. Click anywhere for next step 180 minutes x 60 seconds = 10,800 seconds. Click for Main Menus Peter’s flight was 10,800 seconds.
How is space measured? Would feet be used to measure the distances between planets? No, the distances are way too big. Instead Scientists created a new unit called the Astronomical unit (AU)
1 Astronomical Unit (AU) = 150,000,000 Km (or the average distance from the Earth to the Sun) Sun Earth |----------------------------| 1 Astronomical Unit(AU)
Let’s practice by converting from Km to AU *don’t forget that: 1 au = 150,000,000 Km
Sun to Mercury = 57,900,000 Km I can do it How is it done? Sun Mercury |-----------| ? AU
Divide the distance from the sun to mercury (57,900,000 km) by the distance of 1 AU (150,000,000) 57,900,000 / 150,000,000 = ? Sun Mercury |-----------| ? AU
The distance from the sun to mercury is how many AU? Click for answer Sun Mercury |-----------| ? AU
The distance from the sun to mercury is how many AU? 0.386 au Sun Mercury |-----------| ? AU 0.386 au
Sun to venus= 108,200,000 Km I can do it How is it done? Sun Venus |---------------------| ? AU
Divide the distance from the sun to venus (108,200,000 km) by the distance of 1 AU (150,000,000) 108,200,000 / 150,000,000 = ? Sun Venus |---------------------| ? AU
The distance from the sun to venus is how many AU? Click for answer Sun Venus |---------------------| ? AU
The distance from the sun to venus is how many AU? 0.721 au Sun Venus |---------------------| ? AU 0.721 au
