Who are we…. • About 2 staff mainly on windows and general infrastructure • About 1.5 staff on departmental Linux and Tier 2. • Part of one manager • ‘Year in Industry’ (gap year) student summer 03-04 and again summer 05-06. Gareth Smith RAL PPD
Developments in CCLRC / RAL • Central infrastructure upgraded to Windows 2003 / Active Directory • Keeping existing Windows domain structure. I.e. many separate forests. • Exchange upgraded to Exchange 2003 (from 5.5) Gareth Smith RAL PPD
PPD Desktops / Laptops • Approx 130 desktop systems running Windows XP (Sp1) with Office XP • Use UpdateExpert to rollout patches • Site-wide Sophos anti-virus license • Approx 10 desktops running Linux • A few MACs • Significant numbers of Laptops (around 40). • Mostly Windows XP. • In PPD domain for central Sophos updates. • Use central SUS server for updates • Some Linux, some dual-boot Gareth Smith RAL PPD
PPD Servers • Windows • 2 file servers. Approx. 500GByte available • Backup to tape auto-loader (Scalar24) with SDLT. • Three web servers – plan to consolidate • Citrix terminal server for ‘special’ applications. • Linux • Departmental servers RH7.3. (Update to SL over summer) • Web server RH Enterprise 3 & Apache • CVS Server (SL) • Approx 10 desktops running Linux • Use of samba to access Linux file servers from Windows. Gareth Smith RAL PPD
Tier 2 • Currently • 42 dual nodes • mix of 2.4 and 2.8GHz Xeons. • 0.8TByte disk. • LCG SL 2.4.0 • In two racks • Future: • Additional 6TB to bring into use (DCache) • Additional rack with disk / tape. • SL4 ….. Gareth Smith RAL PPD

Future & Issues • Increase in user filespace for Windows and Linux • Network appliance ? • Power (and cooling) available in computer room is limited. • Ongoing patching etc. • Growing numbers of Laptops – not so easy to manage • Also visitors arriving with laptops. Gareth Smith RAL PPD
