  3. Why Study Religion? • Beliefs-- refers to an explanation for why things are the way they are; beliefs are shaped by • Worldview-- refers to the way we shape meaning in the world. It is the lens through which we interpret our • Experiences-- people join together and celebrate life celebrations (birth, adulthood, death)

  4. Experiences, World View, Beliefs • A person grows up in an environment which is; • Physical-- geographical location, social status, environmental conditions etc. • Look at each image; what would you experience if you lived in these conditions?

  6. Experiences, World View, Beliefs • A person grows up in an environment that is social. We learn from others when we interact through speech and body language. • As you watch the video prepare to discuss how the experience of bullying may affect victims of bullying, bullies and bystanders.

  8. Experiences, World View, Beliefs • Our beliefs are shaped by our experiences and world view. Some shared religious beliefs include; • That there is a purpose to life and that purpose is connected to something greater than ourselves. The human interpretation of that which is greater changes in each religion

  9. The Sacred • Familiar to us is a belief in monotheism; which is a belief in one God.

  10. The Sacred • The eastern view of God is polytheism; a belief in many gods (Hinduism) • Many people also believe in a sacred force; Monistic (Buddhism, Taoism)

  11. Beliefs • Another shared belief among all religions is that our purpose in life is connected to our death. The world view is either; linear which means that life begins at birth and ends with salvation (heaven).

  12. Beliefs • Or Cyclical; which means that all of creation is continuous like a circle

  13. How do we know what to believe? • For centuries human beings have been searching for truth. The search for truth evolves as we learn as individuals and communities. Truth is shaped by Beliefs, Facts and Opinions. • We have established that Beliefs are shaped by experience. They are shared by groups of people and often shape our values.

  14. Facts • How do we know that information is absolutely True? • It must have a valid source (doctor, scientist, judge, teacher, lawyer) • It is documented (contract or agenda) • Always question the source!! (the internet, television or media is not always valid!)

  17. Opinion • An opinion is a value statement. It differs between individuals and is often skewed by our own perception of a situation; • He hates me! • I don’t like pizza. • I can’t wait to work on my assignment! • Everyone is entitled to their own opinion….. • However, a supported opinion is stronger • Valid sources include; academic works, your own experience or influential people
