E.E Cummings’s biography & style • Born in 1894, Massachusetts, had developed a strong interest in poetry, studied English in Harvard University • Non-traditional, experimental • Spare and precise (uses few key words) • Uses some invented words (combining two common words into a new synthesis • Uses words as “if” “am” “because” as nouns, assigning his own meanings to words (meaning > correct grammar) • Often used the pronoun “i” in the lower case, to show that self is not always as important as it seems • Used capital words when he wanted to emphasize them ex) Humanity i love you
