  1. Keeping Safe Online @ Hunters Bar Infants

  2. Some Facts On 11th February 2014 we celebrated Safer Internet Day at HBIS. The theme this year was 'Let's create a better internet together'. In Computing lessons, and during our early morning task, we focused on both the creative things that children and young people are doing online, as well as how we can help to make the Internet a happy and safe place for all.

  3. Playing Games Playing games is great fun. They may have a computer or a console, like a Wii or an Xbox – remember, most consoles connect to the internet. Many of these sites offer social gaming where players can talk to one another. Remember: it’s important that you’re involved in your child’s experiences from the very start.

  4. Making Friends It is important to help your children understand the following areas: Know who their friends are Know what they can see Know what to do if people are being mean

  5. Talking to People Whenever your child is talking to someone online you need to be supervising them. Make sure you know who they are talking to and what about. Social Gaming E-Mail Webcams (including FaceTime and Skype) Instant Messaging and Text

  6. Sharing You can help your child share safely by teaching them to: Not share pictures and videos without your permission. Limit the amount of personal information shared – for example, not to share their address or which school they go to. Only share personal information with their friends.

  7. Searching Note: No filter is 100% accurate and sometimes content slips through the net. Ensure that your child knows to come and tell you if they see something that upsets them.

Mobile Phones & Tablets Tablets and phones can do many things: Access the internet  Take and share photos and videos  Chat with instant messaging, video and text  Share your location  Play games  Add and buy ‘apps’  - IN APP PURCHASING All mobiles and tablets have settings which you can change. You can limit what children can do online. The first thing worth doing is to restrict access to in-app purchases!

  9. Hector’s World At school we use Hector to stay safe online. Hector is a dolphin. If a child sees anything online which worries them they can click on Hector. Hector then covers the screen and alarts the teacher to come and have a look. If the webpage is inappropriate we can report it via the CEOP ages. Hector is available as a free download available to all.

  10. Conversation Starters Talking to your child about the internet is important.

  11. A Family Agreement A good way to set boundaries with your child about what they can and can’t do online is to set an agreement with them. Limit the amount of time your child spends online, or playing computer games. Have regular screen breaks – at least 5-10 minutes every 45-60 minutes. Don’t share any pictures they wouldn’t be happy to share with you. Don’t give out personal details, such as full name, school details and address, to people they don’t know and trust. Come to you if they are concerned.
