Soap stone carvings A look at Inuit Art
What is it ? • http://vimeo.com/16125956 • A video telling you about soap stone • Soapstone (also known as steatite or soaprock) is a metamorphic rock, a talc-schist. It is largely composed of the mineral talc and is thus rich in magnesium. It is produced by dynamothermal metamorphism and metasomatism, which occurs in the areas where tectonic plates are subducted, changing rocks by heat and pressure, with influx of fluids, but without melting. It has been a medium for carving for thousands of years.

What will you sculpt ? • 1) Choose a figure, sketch it on paper. • 2) Draw it from all angles on your soap. • 3) Cut away the parts that aren’t part of your sculpture. • 4) Cut carefully, you only get one bar! • 5) Lightly wet your fingers to smooth the final product. Use the knife or tooth pick to add details.
Done early ? • Write about your sculpture. Use it in a story or tell why you choose that figure and how you made it. • Go back and view all links previous on the slides. • Check out this video • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJfc62VG3Uc&feature=related • Read more • http://www.mitiq.com/sanikiluaq-inuit-artists.htm • Games • http://www.aadnc-aandc.gc.ca/eng/1315492662416 • http://www.aadnc-aandc.gc.ca/eng/1315493127207
