Tuesday October 2st, 2012Board Work – Spelling Rules We already know the “Y” rule. Today we will start to learn the “Silent E” Rule. The Silent E Rule In the word blame the “e” is silent. It is there to make the long “a” sound. Blame + ing = blaming BUT Blame + less = blameless
The Silent E RuleCopy ALL of this into your book If you have a silent e at the end of a word and you want to add an ending. You must first look to see if the ending starts with a vowel (ed, ing, ance) or with a consonant (less, ness) If it is a consonant the e is left alone. Like + ness = likeness If it is a vowel the e is dropped. Like + ing = liking
Practice • Hope + ing = hoping • Hope + ful = hopeful • Write + ing = writing • Hope + less = hopeless • Noise + less = noiseless
