  1. 4-3A EQUIVALENT RATIOS LD 2011

  2. EQUIVALENT • What does this mean to you? • Equal? • The same? • Interchangeable?

  3. Which fraction does not belong?

  4. Why?

  5. Three of these fractions are equivalent. • They are all equal to

  6. Two bakeries are selling rolls. Are their rates equivalent? • 20 rolls for $5 • 48 rolls for $12

  7. Two bakeries are selling rolls. Are their rates equivalent? • 20 rolls for $5 • 48 rolls for $12 • Yes, they both sell 4 rolls for $1

  8. The PE depts of two schools are compared. Are these rates equivalent?? • 42 students on 7 teams • 64 students on 8 teams • No. They do not have the same unit rate

  9. The Pizza Palace sells 3 medium pizzas for $18. The Pizza Factory advertises 5 medium for $30. • Who has the better deal? • They are the same. They are both selling 1 pizza for $6.

  10. Another way to determine if two ratios are equivalent is to use the CRISS-CROSS method.

  11. Are these equivalent? • 5 packs of baseball cards for $15 • 10 packs of baseball cards for $30

  12. Write the ratios as fractions: ?

  13. The question mark indicates that you do not yet know if they are equivalent or not: ?

  14. Now do the CRISS-CROSS: ?

  15. 5 X 30 = 150 ?

  16. 5 X 30 = 15015 X 10 = 150 ?

  17. 5 X 30 = 15015 X 10 = 150 • Since the CRISS equals the CROSS, these ratios are equivalent.

  18. Are these equivalent? • 12 girls out of 16 students. • 4 girls out of 8 students.

  19. Write the ratios as fractions: ?

  20. Now do the CRISS-CROSS: ?

  21. 12 x 8 = 96 ?

  22. 12 x 8 = 9616 x 4 = 64 ?

  23. 12 x 8 = 9616 x 4 = 64 • Since the CRISS does NOT equal the CROSS, the ratios are NOT equivalent.

  24. Open your text to p.225. • Answer problems #1-5.

  25. Check Your Answers • No, Not equivalent • Yes, Equivalent • Yes, Equivalent • No, Not Equivalent • No, Not Equivalent
