Textbook • Investment Science, by D.G. Luenberger, Oxford. • Required. • Why this book? (1) The book cover is green, (2) on page 166, “this is a beautiful result” . • An advanced book, well written. • Luenberger is a professor of Engineering at Stanford University.
Electronic notes (PowerPoint) • Available on my course website. • They serve as the basis for lectures and exams.
Assigned (Journal) articles • If they are assigned, you really need to read them (particularly my papers) before the class. Expect them in the exams as well. • These papers were mostly published in Financial Analysts Journals. They tend to be short and easy to read.
Office hours • Kalkin 315. • Open door policy. • E-mail is the preferred method of telecommunication.
Grades and policies • No curve. • No individual bonus assignment. • Keep all the returned, graded assignments and exams; this is your responsibility. • If you do not like what you earn, talk to me within a week. • No late assignments, except for University allowable reasons.
2 exams • A total of 50% of your grade. • Not cumulative, i.e., the final is not comprehensive. • Rather short: 30-60 minutes? • Multiple choice questions. • Essays. • Calculations. • A review sheet before the exam. • A formula sheet.
Group research project (GRP) • 25% of your grade. • No more than 4 students in a group. • A typed report, 5-10 pages. • E-mail me the topic by the end of the third week of the semester. • Some groups need to do presentation; group bonus. • MBA students need to do a much better, advanced job.
Individual quizzes, assignments, etc. • 25% of your grade. • To be assigned in the class.
Policies and Suggestions • Get good internships. • Join an investment club. • Participate in a research project. • No mobile phone. • MBA students are graded separately.
