  2. 1On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. 3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. • --Acts 2:1-4 (NLT)

  3. Ekklesia (ἐκκλησία) was the New Testament public assembly or gathering that took place to fulfill a political or religious agenda and its Old Testament counterpart is a word called “Qahal” (קהל) which denotes the exact same meaning.

  4. The Lord spoke these words to all of you assembled there at the foot of the mountain. He spoke with a loud voice from the heart of the • fire, surrounded by clouds and deep darkness. • This was all he said at that time, and he wrote his words on two stone tablets and gave them to me. • --Deuteronomy 5:22 (NLT)

  8. In the New Testament, the Church • is no longer an exclusive • gathering, Church is for everyone!

  9. 1. We do church to be real!

  10. 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “You • are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You • did not learn this from any human being. 18 Now • I say to you that you are Peter (which means • ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, • and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. • --Matthew 16:17-18 (NLT)

  11. You come to church to say • “You are the Messiah, • the Son of the living God.”

  12. 1And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with • you to give your bodies to God because of all he • has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. • --Romans 12:1-2 (NLT)

  13. 2. We do church to be relevant!

  14. 12b You are like babies who need milk • and cannot eat solid food. 13 For someone • who lives on milk is still an infant • and doesn’t know how to do what is right. • --Hebrews 5:12b-13 (NLT)

  15. 14Then we will no longer be immature like • children. We won’t be tossed and blown about • by every wind of new teaching. We will not • be influenced when people try to trick us with lies • so clever they sound like the truth. 15 Instead, • we will speak the truth in love, growing in every • way more and more like Christ, who is the • head of his body, the church. • --Ephesians 4:14-15 (NLT)

  16. I have written to you who are God’s children because you know the Father. I have written to • you who are mature in the faith because you know Christ, who existed from the beginning. I have written to you who are young in the faith because you are strong. God’s word lives in your hearts, • and you have won your battle with the evil one. • --1 John 2:14 (NLT)

  17. This will continue until we all come to such unity • in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that • we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to • the full and complete standard of Christ. • --Ephesians 4:13 (NLT)

  18. 3. We do church to be relational!

  19. It isn’t my responsibility to judge outsiders, • but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning. • --1 Corinthians 5:12 (NLT)

  21. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the • nations, baptizing them in the name of • the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. • --Matthew 28:19 (NLT)

  22. 4. We do church to be responsive!

  23. …through the church, the manifold wisdom of • God should be made known. • --Ephesians 3:10 (NLT)

  24. We do church to learn how to be real, relevant, relational and responsive to an unbelieving world.

  25. 22 God has put all things under the authority • of Christ and has made him head over all things • for the benefit of the church. 23 And the church • is his body; it is made full and complete by • Christ, who fills all things everywhere with himself. • --Ephesians 1:22-23 (NLT)
