Dental implants are one of the many restorative options available to fill the spaces left by tooth loss. An implant functions as a tooth root which helps in the prevention of bone loss in the jaw area and preserve the shape of your facial structures.
Dental implants are made from biocompatible materials – often a titanium alloy. Although dental implants are known to be durable and able to withstand chewing forces, there is a need to take care of them, in order for these implants to last longer.
Here are some useful tips on how to take care of your dental implants:You should religiously observe good oral hygiene. It is very important that you clean your teeth regularly and prevent plaque build-up which harbors the bacteria in your mouth.
Proper brushing at least twice a day and flossing should be practiced and never forget to clean interdental spaces with an interdental brush. If available, use antibacterial toothpaste over regular toothpaste to help keep your teeth bacteria free.
Bacterial accumulation around the implant could cause infection of the gums and if left untreated could eventually lead to bone loss around the implant site.Use only low or non-abrasive toothpaste to prevent scratches on the surface of an exposed part of an implant.
Avoid toothpastes containing baking soda, stannous fluoride and stain removers. For those with removable prosthesis, soak the overdenture in a specific denture soaking solution. While soaking, clean your dental implants or abutments using a specific brush and if possible floss around them too.
After soaking, use a denture brush to clean the underside of denture. Rinse it off with water and return the denture in place.Visit your dentist regularly to check the status of your implant. http://www.theelgindentist.com
