Halloween By Katie McCurdie Listening/Speaking 2 – Winter 2012
Outline • Introduction: general information about Halloween • Body: my Halloween experience in 1989 • Conclusion: why I chose this celebration and a final thought
Brief History • Halloween started in ancient times, more than 2000 years ago • Celtic peoples (from Great Britain and France) celebrated a day called Samhain on October 31st • They believed that dead people walked the earth in this day
How do people celebrate now? • Halloween is a FUN and SCARY time, mainly for children. • Children go Trick-or-Treating in costume = ask for candy at their neighbor’s houses.
My experience • How do I know this holiday? 2nd most popular in the U.S. • My family always celebrated it.
My most memorable Halloween: 1989 It was the last day of October…the weather was cool with a light wind…when night came, the full moon shone brightly in the dark sky…
EVENTS OF THE DAY • Arranged Halloween decorations on the house • Carved and lit pumpkins • Prepared costume • Got candy ready
Decorations • My family and I hung pictures of ghosts, skeletons, and witches on the windows • We hung spider webs around the trees • We played scary music from the window
My costume • For a kid, the costume was the most important thing! • In 1989, I was the Hunchback of Notre Dame
Trick-or-treat! • The best part of the night was going trick-or-treating with family or friends! • My candy I wanted the most was Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, yum! • I always tried to make my candy last for months and months…
As you can see… • I loved Halloween as a child because I enjoyed wearing a costume and getting candy! • Not very important; just fun • I like the long history and the fun traditions and memories
The end Thank you for listening and I hope you can experience an American Halloween!
