  5. THE MANY TYPESOF COLLEGES • Public v. Private • Selective v. Open Admission • Two-year v. Four-year • Commuter v. Residential • Large City v. College Town

  6. Some Students May Begin at 2-year Colleges • Meet basic high school core requirements • Build their GPA • Take college core classes • Keep cost down • Obtain employment • You still must apply and submit a high school transcript.

  7. WHERE TO GO FOR SOURCES OF INFORMATION • College catalogs, DVDs, and computer-based services • College representatives and college fairs • Parents, students and alumni • Directories and test score reports • Internet/Websites • Senior Bulletin Board in the East

  9. CAMPUS VISIT • Plan an interview with an admissions officer • Arrange an interview with financial aid officer • Talk with students • Tour campus • Sit in on a class • Stay overnight • Student newspaper

  12. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO GET IN? • First Compulsory education law adopted in Massachusetts in 1952 • Modern home schooling dates back to the 1960’s with the emergence of the “hippie culture” • Grew in popularity in the 1970’s with fundamentalist Christians

  13. HOW MANY APPLICATIONS?? NO SET RULE Apply to at least ONE Academically/Financially SAFE

  14. BHS APPLICATION PROCESS • Complete Application electronically or in traditional manner. THEN Submit to guidance office: • Application itself (unless done on-line) • College Prep Form/Counselor forms (if required). • If student is completing the Common Application or their application requires a recommendation, students need to complete the “Student Input Form for Counselor Recommendation.” • Application fee (if required) • High School transcript request and $2.00

  15. All colleges require that you send them a copy of your OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT with the college application.

  16. WHAT IS A TRANSCRIPT A transcript is a copy of a student’s high school record.

  20. NATIONAL COLLEGE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION College-bound student athletes must register with the NCAA if hoping to play sports at a Division I or Division II school Registering can be done on-line at www.eligibilitycenter.org Transcripts are required to complete application

  22. American College Test ACTScholastic Aptitude Test SAT All four year colleges require SAT or ACT scores to gain admission. Most colleges accept either test. Tests are administered on Saturday mornings: ACT - offered six times throughout the year SAT – offered seven times throughout the year Register on-line at www.actstudent.org, www.collegeboard.com

Students who took the PSAT can log onto the College Board’s “My College Quick Start” and receive the following information: The log-on information is available on the PSAT Score Report that was received in December. Make a slide to recommend that students use the PSAT log in to help them prepare for the ACT/SAT and help with the college search process.
