  2. The Beginnings. • The civil war began in1861. • The war lasted till 1877. • The north side and the south side of the United States fought in the Civil War. • The resolution stated that the war was being waged for the reunion of the states, and not to abolish the south's peculiar institution of slavery.

  3. Major Cause • In America the north and the south disagreed on slavery. • They were divided on their views on slavery.

  4. Significant person from the south. • Robert E. Lee was the most important person for the south. • Robert E. Lee was the commander of all the southern forces during the civil war. • The reason why he fought for the south was because Virginia one of the southern states was Robert E. Lee home state and he wanted to fight for his state.

  5. Significant person from the north. • Ulysses S. Grant was the most important person for the north. • He was the commander of the Union forces during the Civil war for the north. • While he was the commander of the northern forces he wanted to take the Mississippi Valley. He ended up taking Fort McHenry and attacked Fort Donelson. • For his next objective Grant fought skillfully to win Vicksburg the key city of the Mississippi. After he took Vicksburg this cut the Confederacy in half this boosted his reputation in the West. • President Lincoln appointed Grant to General-in-Chief in March 1864. To end the war Grant and the Union forces marched into Northern Virginia and pinned down Robert E. Lee’s forces. After this battle this forced the South to surrender and the north won the Civil War. • Ulysses died in 1885.

  6. Turning point in the war • After almost two years of the war,1863 opened with the president Lincoln's formal issuance of the Emancipation proclamation. • This gave the war preservation of the union an added meaning. • Although the proclamation did not actually free any slaves, freedom was restricted to areas under control of the southern confederacy. • Its meaning resounded throughout the divided the divided nation and into Europe.

  7. Life on the home front • The kids needed to take on more responsibilities. • The women and the girls did most of the housework and the boys did all the things the men did. • They all needed to do more work on their farms.

  8. Major effects of the war • Abraham Lincoln died. • Slavery was abolished.

  9. Final resolution • The north side won the war. • In the end everything was peaceful. • The war lasted1861-1877.
