Luke 23:1-8

1. Luke 23:1-8 Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate. 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king.”

2. 3 So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied. 4 Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”

3. 5 But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee and has come all the way here.”

4. 6 On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean. 7 When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.

5. 8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him. From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort.

6. Different ReactionsLuke 22 -24 We all react differently to events We see events differently We handle stress differently We fail differently

7. There are many characters in our story Today we will look at four people Judas and Peter Pilate and Herod

8. Luke 22 2 …the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus.

9. 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money. 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.

10. When we are honest with ourselves we realize a few things… We are all capable of good and evil We are great at making excuses We have good intentions but we do not always follow through

11. 19 And he took bread… 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup... 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays him.” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.

12. 47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

13. We like it when life is simple When we can easily connect the dots Make sweeping declarations But life is rarely that easy

14. In Christianity, many have accepted that suicide is always sinful and leads to hell This belief comes from this event with Judas Judas betrayed Jesus then killed himself Because Jesus said “Woe to that man” We make assumptions

15. People who commit suicide likewise are going to hell • Suicide is not a first option it’s a last option • Suicide is about being/feeling out of control • Suicide is often connected to mental health issues • Jesus does not close the doors of heaven for specific events in our lives

16. Luke 22 31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” 33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”

17. 34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”

18. Some of us are sure we know that we will do well under pressure And we are surprised when we fail

19. 45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”

20. Peter was part of this group who could not even stay awake to pray He knew what he wanted to do Just could not do it

21. 57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said. 58 …“Man, I am not!” Peter replied. 60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed.

22. 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.

23. Two men fail But their reactions are different Why? That is the way we are Different!

25. Pilate sends Jesus to Herod Pilate is ambivalent Herod is excited

26. 8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him. From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform some miracle.

27. 11 Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe, they sent him back to Pilate. 12 That day Herod and Pilate became friends—before this they had been enemies.

28. Herod’s excitement quickly wanes when Jesus refuses to perform Herod wants a miracle He wants proof Maybe just entertainment

29. 14 …“You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him. 15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore, I will punish him and then release him.”

30. There was a plan Punish Jesus Embarrass him Put him in his place and set him free

31. 18 With one voice they cried out, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!” 19 (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.) 20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. 21 But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”

32. 22 …“Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.” 23 But…

33. 24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.

34. Pilate and Herod are powerful Pilate can not save Jesus Herod can not get Jesus to perform on demand Not so powerful after all!

35. Luke 24 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

36. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.

37. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

38. Peter says he is willing to die for Jesus Then he denies Jesus Still unsure what he believes Peter is still trying to figure things out And he is the hero of our story

39. Putting it all together It would be nice if life's answers were always clear and concise We need to be careful not to oversimplify complicated issues Easy answers are for those who think they know everything

40. Putting it all together We may think we know how we will react The truth is that we never know what we will do when we are hard pressed We may crumble, deny or give up

41. Putting it all together We are not the judges of life People do some questionable things We do not know the whole story Only God knows We must let God be the judge

42. I would love to tell you this is the way to do things This is right That is wrong This is good and that is bad I can only expound on God’s word and let you make the ultimate decision.
