Sutherland Volleyball Academy Information Meeting April 16, 2012
Volleyball Academy Overview • First Volleyball Academy program available in the North Vancouver District. • A unique partnership between Sutherland Secondary School, the North Vancouver School District and Volleyball Canada.
What is the problem? 1. Canadian athletes have poor fundamental volleyball skills. 2. Canadian 16-18 year old athletes are around 100 hours/year short in the LTAD recommended amount of practice time. 3. Canadian youth are coached by volunteers, whereas other top countries use paid professionals 4. Very few athletes are training enough, in a quality environment. Target of 800 (per gender) across Canada for grades 10-12.
What is happening in BC? 5 VCCE programs are running – Richmond, Langley , Abbotsford, Victoria and Kelowna. Plans to expand to each College and University in the Province 10 new coaches (2 missing). Primarily assistant coaches of CIS programs and head coaches of CCAA programs.
What is the Solution? 1. Provide training for 16-18 year olds 2 days a week for 6.5 months (100 hours). This allows us to reach the recommended 4 days a week for 9 months. • Use professional ‘development coaches’
What are the benefits of a VCCE? • Professional coaches – high standards, yearly professional development and sharing best practices across all Centres.
