• My householder disciples should donate one tenth of their earnings to Lord Krishna. Those who cannot afford this shall donate on one twentieth
Reasons for Donation • To purify ones wealth • It is a form of investment (Do not be too greedy) • Growth of our Satsang using the sustainance of our temples • Well being of the future generation • To accumulate our punya
1. Purification of wealth • ShreemadBhagwad says- all who desires peace, well-being and punya should donate and it further explains that “just as the body becomes purified by bathing, just as by doing tap (penance) the senses become purified, just as by knowledge (gnan) the soul gets purified………..so ones wealth also becomes purified through donation.”
2. Form of Investment • It is said in shreemadbhagavad that one will be rewarded with more money if one donates a tenth of his or her income to the Lord Supreme. • This should not be the main purpose of our donation as it will be explained later that we should have no desire for its returns.
3. Sustainance of our temples • Lord Swaminarayan said that he has asked devotees to donate because he has kept nothing for Ajivika (expenses) for the temple. • It is due to the donations from all these satsangis that we are where we are now, i.e. the temples we have right now, doing satsang together under one roof. If such donations were not done then we would not be where we are now.
4. Well Being of the Future Generation • Bringing your kids to the temple and letting them participate in Yuvakmandals like ours builds up the culture and sanskars in them which they pass onto their children. This cycle goes on forever due to the availability of Temples.
5. To accumulate our punya • By donating the money to the temple of Lord shreeswaminarayan, one adds to ones punya and receives the fruits of one’s labour in heaven or attains a good life if one is to be re-incarnated.
What is Dharmado? • Donation comprises of your earnings after tax and superannuation but not after household and personal expenses. • Dharmado does not constitute the following: • Giving rasoi and dhotiyasto santos, • doing thaad in temples. • Donating on an adhoc basis as you have more than enough
How much Dharmado to give? • If you are well of in terms of wealth then 10% of your earnings otherwise if there is financial hardship 5% of your earnings. • Remember that God did two deshvibhags and our BhujMandir is our mother temple under NarnarayandevAmdavad, therefore our dharmado should only go to Bhuj Temple as we have to be consistent when giving dharmado.
How to give Dharmado • One should donate with love because it is the love that also matters but not just the amount you donate. • One should not donate with ego and pride to become popular • One shouldn’t also donate in order to expect something in return but one should donate with the feeling that we are trying to repay back to God what he has given us.
