The History of Chinese Shadow Puppetry Began over 2,000 years ago The first puppets were made with paper. Then they were made out of animal hides, or pi ying. Princes during that time had paid puppeteers, sometimes as many as eight, working for them.
A Business of the Five • Takes five people for a puppet troupe. • One person operates the puppets, another plays a horn, another plays the fiddle, one person plays percussion, and the last person sings. • The person who sings does the voices for all of the puppets. Video Clip
The Stage • The stage has two parts: the screen and the light behind the screen. • Our stage is made out of wood. • Traditional screens were lit with coconut oil lamps hanging on bamboo frames. For our screen, we are using fabric and for our light we are using a projector.
Making Your Own Puppet Show • Work with a partner. • Decide on two jokes or a short play, and perform a brief puppet show for the class. • You’ll have time to: • Pick your jokes/play • Make your puppets • Practice your show • Mr. H and Ms. P will model for you.
Steps For Your Puppet Show • Choose a partner. • Select two jokes OR a short play. • Decide who will say each part of each joke OR the play. • Make your puppets. • Practice your show with your partner. • Perform for the class!
