  1. Heterogeneous 9th Grade English

  2. Context and Background December 2012 Headmaster and Core Coordinators Meet to Discuss NEASC Equity Standard NEASC STANDARD 5 -- School Culture and Leadership "The school is equitable and inclusive where every student, over the course of four years of high school, is enrolled in heterogeneous classes in each curriculum area."* *NEASC deems that one year of heterogeneous grouping in a core subject area is enough to satisfy this standard

  3. January 2013 Departments Met to Discuss Possibilities •Based upon a variety of factors heterogeneous grouping was deemed a poor fit for science, math and social studies •ELA teachers agreed to "unlevel" 9th grade classes

  4. Notification of Change March - High School Site Council Presentation March - High School Program of Studies Night

  5. Implementation and Options Differentiated Instruction and Assessment Stretch Assignments/Student Portfolios

  6. Sample Impact of Unleveled 9th Grade English on GPA • Assume a minimum of 24 courses factored into the GPA (there are generally more, lessening the impact even more) • Assume an "A" could have been earned in Honors (worth 4.5) instead of an "A" in Level 1 (worth 4.0)--a difference of .5 on the weighted average • A difference of .021 should not have any significant effect on either standing within the class (deciles have a range of about .30) or GPA (e.g. 3.36 vs. 3.38--both are still a 3.4 when rounded). total of weighted points earned total of weighted points earned .5 .021 24 24 24
