Getting Vaccines to the Children Who Need Them Helping create systems to deliver existing vaccines and rapidly introduce future vaccines as they become available. Working Together in Global Partnership The Gates CVP is a founding member of GAVI and helped establish the Global Fund for Children’s Vaccines.

  5. Founding member of GAVI was established in 1999 to coordinate the immunization-strengthening efforts of key agencies like WHO, UNICEF, the World Bank, and the Gates CVP at PATH. This includes getting new and underutilized vaccines to all the children who need them, in a safe manner.

The Global Fund for Children’s Vaccines was established with $750 million from The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. • A total of $1.8 billion is required to immunize children against hepatitis B, haemophilus influenzae type B, and yellow fever and to strengthen vaccination systems in the poorest countries . • GAVI and the Fund managers are seeking additional resources to make up the difference (Norway, UK, US).

Injection Safety in GAVI and the Fund • WHO and UNICEF are key GAVI partners, therefore GAVI is guided by their joint policies regarding injection safety and use and disposal of auto-disable syringes. • The GAVI partners encourage use of combination vaccines to minimize the total number of injections, however current shortages are frustrating. • The GAVI partners have declared that injection safety is one of the most important indicators of immunization program quality.

  8. Injection Safety in GAVI and the Fund 2 • GAVI and the Global Fund will provide auto-disable syringes and disposal equipment with all vaccines, except in cases where countries have a policy to use sterilizable equipment. • The GAVI partners are now working to define precise injection safety monitoring and assessment indicators. • PATH is working on new injection and sharps management solutions (i.e. Uniject, needle-free reconstitution of vaccine, and new “defanging” technologies). • WHO is working on small scale incineration options for final disposal at the district level.
