Paul before King Agrippa ”Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand and answered for himself.” (Act 26:1) • Paul was happy to witness before king Agrippa vs.2 • if only he would listen to Paul patiently vs.3 • as in his previous trials Paul testifies he was a Pharisee vs.5 • the hope of the promises made to our fathers is critical vs.6 • arguments over the hope to come is behind Paul’s woes vs.7
“It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks” ”Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?” (Act 26:8) • Paul admits that he had vigorously opposed Jesus vs.11 • but on his way to Damascus a light shone from heaven vs.13 • and he heard a voice: “Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.” (Acts 26:14) • the account Paul gives here is more detailed than in Acts 9:6
The Purpose of the Vision! “…I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. But rise, and stand upon upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; Delivering thee from the people and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.” (Act 25:15-18)

(Acts 26) • I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision vs.19 • I showed the Gentiles that they should: • repent • turn to God • do works meet for repentance vs.20 • this is why the Jews caught me in the temple to kill me vs.21 • by God’s help I remain to this day, witnessing to all • saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come vs.22
Paul before King Agrippa Act 26:23 Note in Paul’s reply, the scriptures predicted that Jesus: • had to suffer • must be resurrected • would proclaim salvation • to the Jews and Gentiles
”And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad.” (Act 26:24) I am not mad but speak forth the words of truth and soberness vs.25 I’m sure none of this has escaped your notice vs.26 “King Agrippa, believeth thou the prophets? I know that thou believeth. vs.27 ”Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian. And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds” (Act 26:28) Agrippa and the others stepped aside “This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds” vs.31 Agrippa said to Festus: “This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed to Caesar.” vs.32 “Festus yells out” “Agrippa sidesteps”
Lesson for US In this chapter Paul’s tells how his life was transformed • First he came to believe in the risen Christ • and his new life was one of obedience to God • his first act of obedience was baptism Our path to salvation is the same as Paul’s • belief • obedience • baptism ECHO! “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” Mark 16:16
