This week we are going to look at two other very important aspects to the being of God…
Let’s attempt to DEFINE & DEFEND these attributes…
omniscient All-wise Knowing everything & all things Having all knowledge Perceiving all things Unlimited wisdom Knowing all things fully
sovereign In control In control of everything & all things Having ultimate power Supreme authority & rule Having the final say in all matters Determining force & power
First, when we say that God is Omniscient we mean that: He knows everything: everything possible, everything actual; all events and all creatures, of the past, the present & the future.
Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Hebrews 4:13
Second, when we say that God is Omniscient we mean that: Nothing escapesHis notice. Nothing can be hidden from him, nothing is forgotten by him.
You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.Psalm 139:2-4
Third, when we say that God is Omniscient we mean that: His knowledge is perfect. He never errs and never overlooks anything.
What is the price of two sparrows-one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.Matt 10:29-30
Fourth, when we say that God is Omniscient we mean that: God knows all that can be known or everwill be known, perfectlyand instantly.
That is: Everything that ever will be known, or ever could be known, is only knowable, because God already knows it.
He determines the number of the stars; he gives to all of them their names. Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.Psalm 147:4-5
God Everything that can ever be known
Fifth, when we say that God is Omniscient we mean that: God has not learned and will never learn anything new or something that he did not already know, perfectly & instantly.
Who is able to advise the Spirit of the LORD? Who knows enough to give him advice or teach him? Has the LORD ever needed anyone's advice? Does he need instruction about what is good? Did someone teach him what is right or show him the path of justice? Isaiah 40:13-15a
Sixth, when we say that God is Omniscient we mean that: God knows all things equally. He knows no thing better than any other thing, but all things equally, fully and perfectly.
Seventh, when we say that God is Omniscient we mean that: God is solitary in his omniscience. No other being, or the sum total of all beings, ever in existence, could ever know what God knows.
God perfectly knows all that canbe known. And this He knows instantly and with a fullness of perfection that includes every possible item of knowledge concerning everything that exists or could have existed anywhere in the universe at any time in the past or that may exist in the centuries or ages yet unborn. Aw Tozer
God knows instantly and effortlessly all matter and all matters. God knows instantly and effortlessly all mind and every mind, all spirit and all spirits, all beings and every being, all creatures and every creature, all law and every law, all relations…
…all causes, all thoughts, all mysteries, all feeling, all desires, every unuttered secret, all thrones and powers, all personalities, all things visible and invisible in heaven and in earth, motion, space, time, life, death, good, evil, heaven, and hell. Aw Tozer
It could be ‘possible’ to know all things ‘statistically’ or perfectly and completely...
...and yet, not know what to do with all things correctly, properly or wisely.
God not only knows all things he knows all things correctly and his knowing is a completely wise knowledge.
Or that is; What God knows about any given thing is the best and correct and right thing to know about that thing.
God’s wisdom is the sum of his omniscience added to his love, mercy and grace.
Wisdom means that God’s knowledge about all things; creation, function, process, science, physics, morality, humanity, etc...
Is not just one form of knowledge about those things...but it is the only true and correct knowledge about those things.
And his knowledge combined with his love, mercy and grace means that his instruction about all those things is not simply true and correct but also wise and best.
We want to make a few summarizing remarks about the sovereignty of God…while also attempting to avoid age old debates about the relationship of God’s sovereignty & man’s freedom.
First, when we say that God is Sovereign we mean that: He possesses complete and absoluteuniversal authority.
I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me. I distinguish the end from the beginning, and ancient times from what is still to come, saying: ‘My purpose will be established, and I will accomplish all My good pleasure.’ Isaiah 46:9-10
I summon a bird of prey from the east, a man for My purpose from a far-off land. Truly I have spoken, truly I will bring it to pass. I have planned it, I will surely do it... Isaiah 46:11
The LORD of Hosts has sworn: "As I have planned, so will it be; as I have purposed, so will it stand.Isaiah 14:24
Second, when we say that God is Sovereign we mean that: He is utterly free to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants & however he wants to do it: No one and nothing can ultimately hinder him or stop him.
Similarly, God is not restricted or restrained in anyway from doing what he wants, with whoever or whatever he wants, whenever he wants. He is the creator, the sustainer and the final authority.
The only instances where God could be said to be restricted is if God himself has constrained himself either by his characteror his covenants.
Meaning, God cannot lie and is restrained by the truth in his very character.
Or, God cannot sin and is restrained by the holiness in his very character.
Meaning, God cannot break his covenant or his promise to act in a certain way, because he has bound himself to his word.
All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: “What have you done?” Daniel 4:35
I know that You can do all things, And that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted. Job 42:2
Third, when we say that God is Sovereign we mean that: God is in full control of all things, all people, all events and all outcomes. Whether by causation or counteraction, God is in ultimate control.
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Colossians 1:16-17
Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.”Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” James 4:13-15
