Human Rights in Asia:Some issues Jeff Plantilla HURIGHTS OSAKA
Issues in Asia-Pacific Asia is confronted with diverse issues arising from the multitude of situations in the subregions and countries within its territory. Best option: highlight a few issues
Preliminary Thoughts • Jakarta Post editorial • Conversation with a Burman • Rape of a Thai girl • CAP and DRIK • Village Constitutions
Transition Period Change beyond the intellectuals Fukuzawa Yuichi
Subregional Contexts • Mekong subregion - unsettled history between Thailand, Burma, Kampuchea, Laos • Indonesia-Malaysia - each country claims ownership of specific cultural icons (traditional dance [Pendet], song [Rasa Sayang]), textile design (batik), puppetry (wayang kulit), dagger (kris), national anthem (Negaraku) • Indo-Pak relations - unending feud among people who originally lived in one country • Gulf region - Saudi Arabia (Sunni) versus Iran (Shia) dynamics
Subregional Contexts • These subregional tensions have underlying issues that are generally founded on perception of superiority (and aided by economic strength) of one country over the other(s). • This perception (wrong in the first place) leads to stereotyping of people in a negative sense (backward, violent, etc.) that is a form of discrimination. Popular protests arise, that turn violent in some cases, based mainly on hate. • Northeast Asia has the most difficult subregional situation as shown in the absence of any intergovernmental subregional structure.
