Family Violence… A Community Issue Presented by the Whitecourt Comprehensive Family Violence Initiative
Family Violence is………. About one person having Power & Control Over another person in an intimate relationship
There are 7Types of Family Violence
Physical Financial Abandonment Sexual Spiritual Emotional Psychological
Children are victims of family violence when they: • Hear it • See it • Experience it physically, emotionally or sexually
Between 1991 and 1999, 617 women and 165 men were killed in Canada by a current or ex-spouse.
Whitecourt RCMP Statistics for Domestic Violence in Whitecourt from October 2004 to October 2005 • 35 files that met specific description and charges laid • 12 files that charges were laid but were withdrawn by the crown due to lack of sufficient evidence or lack of co-operation of victim • 13 files of domestic violence with not enough evidence to charge
The Whitecourt Comprehensive Family Violence Initiative recognizes that in Whitecourt there is • the need to work proactively rather than reactively • a need to offer services and/or treatment to both the victim(s) and the offender • a need to increase awareness about family violence issues in this community so that the community can take a stand against family violence • a lack of low income housing and transportation available for women who wish to leave abusive situations • because of underfunding and understaffing, a lack of specialized police services to deal with family violence issues
We are asking Town Councilors to • support the initiatives put forth by the stakeholders of the Whitecourt Initiative • take a public stand against family violence and recognize that family violence is a community issue that is everybody’s business • increase funding for low income housing and transportation so that women and children will be able to afford housing when leaving a violent relationship • increase funding to the RCMP so there is more police time available • for educational purposes • to deal with family violence issues.
